Official abstract text for this publication.
In various embodiments, a color gamut mapper includes a gamut map selection generator configured to analyze color space signals and generate a gamut map selection signal in response thereto. A color gamut transformer is configured to process the color space signals via a selected one of a plurality of gamut maps to generate gamut mapped color space signals, wherein the selected one of the plurality of gamut maps is selected in response to the gamut map selection signal. Other embodiments are disclosed.

What is claimed is: 1 . A color gamut mapper comprising: a gamut map selection generator configured to analyze color space signals and generate a gamut map selection signal in response thereto; and a color gamut transformer configured to process the color space signals via a selected one of a plurality of gamut maps to generate gamut mapped color space signals, wherein the selected one of the plurality of gamut maps is selected in response to the gamut map selection signal. 2 . The color gamut mapper of claim 1 wherein the gamut map selection generator analyzes the color space signals for an individual pixel of a video picture to generate the gamut map selection signal for the individual pixel; and wherein the color gamut transformer processes the color space signals for the individual pixel via the selected one of a plurality of gamut maps. 3 . The color gamut mapper of claim 2 wherein the gamut map selection generator: analyzes the color space signals for the individual pixel to determine one of a plurality of color space regions corresponding to the individual pixel; and generates the gamut map selection signal based on the one of the plurality of color space regions. 4 . The color gamut mapper of claim 3 wherein the gamut map selection generator analyzes the color space signals by transforming the color space signals into an alternative color domain, and wherein the plurality of color space regions correspond to the alternative color domain. 5 . The color gamut mapper of claim 3 wherein the plurality of color space regions include a first color space region about a white point that is smaller than an output gamut of the gamut mapped color space signals. 6 . The color gamut mapper of claim 5 wherein the plurality of color space regions include a second color space region, sized to the output gamut, that excludes the first color space region. 7 . The color gamut mapper of claim 6 wherein the plurality of color space regions include a third color space region that is outside the second color space region. 8 . The color gamut mapper of claim 1 wherein the plurality of gamut maps have differing compression slopes. 9 . A method comprising: analyzing color space signals and generating a gamut map selection signal in response thereto; selecting one of a plurality of gamut maps in response to the gamut map selection signal; and processing the color space signals via the selected one of a plurality of gamut maps to generate gamut mapped color space signals. 10 . The method of claim 9 wherein analyzing the color space signals includes analyzing the color space signals for an individual pixel of a video picture to generate the gamut map selection signal for the individual pixel; and wherein processing the color space signals includes processing the color space signals for the individual pixel via the selected one of a plurality of gamut maps. 11 . The method of claim 10 wherein analyzing the color space signals includes: analyzing the color space signals for the individual pixel to determine one of a plurality of color space regions corresponding to the individual pixel; and generating the gamut map selection signal based on the one of the plurality of color space regions. 12 . The method of claim 11 wherein analyzing the color space signals includes transforming the color space signals into an alternative color domain, and wherein the plurality of color space regions correspond to the alternative color domain. 13 . The method of claim 11 wherein the plurality of color space regions include a first color space region about a white point that is smaller than an output gamut of the gamut mapped color space signals. 14 . The method of claim 13 wherein the plurality of color space regions include a second color space region, sized to the output gamut, that excludes the first color space region. 15 . The method of claim 14 wherein the plurality of color space regions include a third color space region that is outside the second color space region. 16 . The method of claim 9 wherein the plurality of gamut maps have differing compression slopes.
