What is claimed is: 1 . A composition comprising an isolated BH3 peptide of less than or equal to 50 amino acids in length, and a mitochondrion. 2 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the BH3 peptide is a pro-apoptotic BID-like BH3 peptide. 3 . The composition of claim 2 , wherein the BID-like BH3 peptide includes an amino acid sequence selected from SEQ ID NOs: 1, 2, and 10. 4 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the BH3 peptide is an anti-anti-apoptotic BAD-like BH3 peptide. 5 . The composition of claim 4 , wherein the BAD-like BH3 peptide includes an amino acid sequence selected from SEQ ID NOs: 3-7 and 11. 6 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the mitochondrion is isolated from a cell. 7 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the BH3 peptide is less than or equal to 35 amino acids in length. 8 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the BH3 peptide is less than or equal to 25 amino acids in length. 9 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the BH3 peptide is less than or equal to 15 amino acids in length. 10 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the isolated BH3 peptide is in a complex with a BCL-2 or BCL-XL protein resident on the mitochondrion. 11 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the isolated BH3 peptide is in a complex with a MCL-1 protein resident on the mitochondrion. 12 . A composition comprising a mitochondrion contacted with an isolated BH3 peptide of less than or equal to 50 amino acids in length. 13 . The composition of claim 12 , wherein the BH3 peptide is a pro-apoptotic BID-like BH3 peptide. 14 . The composition of claim 13 , wherein the BID-like BH3 peptide includes an amino acid sequence selected from SEQ ID NOs: 1, 2, and 10. 15 . The composition of claim 12 , wherein the BH3 peptide is an anti-anti-apoptotic BAD-like BH3 peptide. 16 . The composition of claim 15 , wherein the BAD-like BH3 peptide includes an amino acid sequence selected from SEQ ID NOs: 3-7 and 11. 17 . The composition of claim 12 , wherein the mitochondrion is isolated from a cell. 18 . The composition of claim 12 , wherein the BH3 peptide is less than or equal to 35 amino acids in length. 19 . The composition of claim 12 , wherein the BH3 peptide is less than or equal to 25 amino acids in length. 20 . The composition of claim 12 , wherein the BH3 peptide is less than or equal to 15 amino acids in length. 21 . The composition of claim 12 , wherein the isolated BH3 peptide is in a complex with a BCL-2 or BCL-XL protein resident on the mitochondrion. 22 . The composition of claim 12 , wherein the isolated BH3 peptide is in a complex with a MCL-1 protein resident on the mitochondrion.
