Platinum and palladium complexes are disclosed that can be useful as narrow band phosphorescent emitters. Also disclosed are methods for preparing and using the platinum and palladium complexes.

A composition comprising a complex of the formula: wherein: M is platinum or palladium, each of Ar 1 , Ar 2 , Ar 3 , and Ar 4 is independently a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic ring or heterocyclic group, each of X 1 , X 2 , X 3 , and X 4 is independently a carbon or a nitrogen atom, Ar 5 is an aromatic ring or a heterocyclic group, Ar 6 is an aromatic ring, a heterocyclic group, or is absent, A 1 is an optionally substituted nitrogen, carbon, boron, phosphorus, or silicon atom, each of b 1 , b 2 , and b 3 is individually present or absent, and each b 1 , b 2 and b 3 present is independently an oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, carbon, boron, phosphorus, or silicon atom. 9 . The composition of claim 8 , wherein is isoquinolinyl, methylimidazolyl, or is phenyl; is pyridyl or phenyl; is phenyl or pyridyl; is: phenyl; and is absent. 10 - 19 . (canceled) 20 .
