A pump for administering an agent to a patient includes a housing, a motor, a gearbox, a sensor, and a controller. The motor may be coupled to housing. The gearbox is operatively connected to said motor. The sensor senses a rotation of said motor. The controller acts to control operation of said motor and monitor the quantity of said agent delivered to said patient. The pump also includes a pump assembly such that the pump is configured such that the pump assembly may be interchangeable from a syringe pump assembly and a peristaltic pump assembly.

The syringe pump according to claim 26 , wherein the first and second flange-clamp jaws are disposed on the plunger head assembly and are configured to grasp onto a plunger flange of a plunger of the syringe, wherein the first and second flange-clamp jaws are configured to actuate between an open position and a closed position. 28 . The syringe pump according to claim 25 , further comprising a user-controlled actuator disposed on the plunger head assembly and configured for actuation by a user. 29 . The syringe pump according to claim 28 , wherein: the shaft is operatively coupled to the user-controlled actuator, the shaft is elongated along a length thereby defining an axis along the length, and actuation of the user-controller actuator rotates the shaft around the axis. 30 . The syringe pump according to claim 25 , further comprising: a lead screw; and a sliding block assembly, the sliding block assembly comprising a threaded section configured for engaging and disengaging from the lead screw, wherein the plunger head assembly is coupled to the sliding block assembly to drive a plunger of the syringe into a barrel of the syringe. 31 . The syringe pump of claim 25 , further comprising: at least one cam follower; and at least one bias member, the bias member biasing the cam toward an end of the shaft, wherein the cam is slideable along the shaft, wherein movement of the at least one cam follower along the cam overcomes the bias member and allows the shaft to operatively actuate the latch. 32 . The syringe pump of claim 25 , wherein the cam, at least one cam follower, and at least one bias member are coupled to the shaft, the cam not rotatable with the shaft but displaceable along an axial dimension of the shaft, the at least one cam follower fixedly coupled to the shaft and rotatable with the shaft, and wherein rotation of the shaft causes movement of the at least one cam follower along the cam thereby displacing the cam along the axial dimension of the shaft. 33 . The syringe pump of claim 25 , wherein a bias member is configured to bias the cam such that the latch is biased to a closed position. 34 . The syringe pump of claim 25 , wherein the cam comprises at least one detent, each of the at least one detent being reached by one of at least one cam follower, wherein the at least one detent is configured to form a dwell to hold the one of the at least one cam follower at a predetermined position corresponding to an open position of the latch. 35 . The syringe pump of claim 25 , wherein the plunger head assembly further comprises a pressure sensor configured to monitor a pressure of an agent being dispensed from the syringe. 36 . The syringe pump of claim 35 , wherein a plunger flange of the syringe is held against the pressure sensor by the latch. 37 . The syringe pump of claim 25 , wherein the syringe pump further comprises a barrel flange clip, the barrel flange clip configured to retain a barrel flange of the syringe. 38 . The syringe pump of claim 37 , further comprising an optical sensor and a light source configured to detect a presence of the syringe. 39 . The syringe pump according to claim 25 , wherein the syringe pump is configured to communicate with a monitoring client. 40 . The syringe pump according to claim 25 , further comprising a potentiometer configured to monitor an actuation of the latch, wherein the potentiometer is keyed to a parallel shaft operatively coupled in parallel to the shaft. 41 . The syringe pump according to claim 25 , further comprising at least one set of redundant sensors, the at least one set of redundant sensors configured such that if part of a set of the at least one set of redundant sensors is compromised, the syringe pump is configured to function in a fail operative mode for at least a duration of a therapy, the set of the at least one set of redundant sensors is configured to monitor a volume being infused. 42 . The syringe pump according to claim 25 , further comprising a cam follower configured to engage with the engagement surface of the cam, wherein the cam follower is coupled to the shaft to rotate with the shaft. 43 . The syringe pump according to claim 42 , further comprising another cam follower configured to engage with the engagement surface of the cam, wherein the cam follower and the another cam follower are about 180° offset from each other along radial angles away from the axis of the shaft. 44 . The syringe pump according to claim 42 , further comprising a bias member coupled to the cam to bias the cam surface against the cam follower. 45 . The syringe pump according to claim 44 , further comprising a retaining ring disposed along the shaft and configured to retain the bias member along the shaft, the retaining ring is positioned at an end of the bias member opposite to an end of the bias member that engages with the cam. 46 . The syringe pump according to claim 44 , wherein the bias member is configured to bias the cam against the cam follower, wherein the engagement surface of the cam is configured such that the bias member transfers a force from the bias member, to the cam, and to the cam follower to thereby exert a rotational force on the shaft. 47 .
