This invention relates to molecular and cellular biology and biochemistry. In one aspect, the invention provides polypeptides having cellulase activity, e.g., endoglucanase, cellobiohydrolase, mannanase and/or β-glucosidase activity, polynucleotides encoding these polypeptides, and methods of making and using these polynucleotides and polypeptides. In one aspect, the invention is directed to polypeptides cellulase activity, e.g., endoglucanase, cellobiohydrolase, mannanase and/or β-glucosidase activity, including thermostable and thermotolerant activity, and polynucleotides encoding these enzymes, and making and using these polynucleotides and polypeptides. The polypeptides of the invention can be used in a variety of pharmaceutical, agricultural, food and feed processing and industrial contexts.

The isolated or recombinant nucleic acid of claim 1 , wherein the cellulase activity comprises hydrolyzing a glucan to produce a smaller molecular weight polysaccharide or oligomer; an endo-1,4-beta-endocellulase activity; endo-1,4-beta-D-glucan 4-glucano hydrolase activity; hydrolyzing polysaccharides comprising glucopyranose; hydrolyzing polysaccharides comprising 1,4-β-glycoside-linked D-glucopyranoses; and/or hydrolyzing a cellulose or a cellulose derivative or a hemicellulose. 4 . The isolated or recombinant nucleic acid of claim 1 , wherein the cellulase activity comprises catalyzing hydrolysis of 1,4-beta-D-glycosidic linkages; glucanase linkages, β-1,4- and/or β-1,3-glucanase linkages, endo-glucanase linkages, internal endo-β-1,4-glucanase linkages and/or β-1,3-glucanase linkages. 5 . The isolated or recombinant nucleic acid of claim 1 , wherein the cellulase activity is thermostable or thermotolerant. 6 . A cloning vehicle comprising a nucleic acid comprising a sequence as set forth in claim 1 , wherein optionally the cloning vehicle comprises a viral vector, a plasmid, a phage, a phagemid, a cosmid, a fosmid, a bacteriophage or an artificial chromosome, and optionally the viral vector comprises an adenovirus, a retroviral vector or an adeno-associated viral vector, and optionally the cloning vehicle comprises a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC), a plasmid, a bacteriophage P1-derived vector (PAC), a yeast artificial chromosome (YAC), or a mammalian artificial chromosome (MAC). 7 . A transformed cell comprising a nucleic acid comprising a sequence as set forth in claim 1 , wherein optionally the cell is a bacterial cell, a mammalian cell, a fungal cell, a yeast cell, an insect cell or a plant cell. 8 .
