The invention concerns the use of hepcidin for the diagnosis and therapy of disorders of iron homeostasis. Hepcidin can be used in the treatment of disorders resulting from iron overload, while inhibitors of hepcidin can he used in the treatment of anaemia.

A method for reducing iron overload in a patient in need thereof, comprising administering to said patient a polypeptide comprising a sequence of 20 amino acids having: at least 50% identity with the sequence SEQ ID NO: 1 cysteine residues at positions 2, 5, 6, 8, 9, 14, 17, and 18, and wherein the polypeptide is able to reduce iron absorption. 15 . A method according to claim 14 , wherein said polypeptide has at least 60% identity with the sequence SEQ ID NO: 1. 16 . A method according to claim 14 , wherein the polypeptide has at least 60% similarity with the sequence SEQ ID NO: 1. 17 . A method according to claim 14 , wherein the polypeptide has at least 70% similarity with the sequence SEQ ID NO: 1. 18 . A method according to claim 14 , wherein the polypeptide comprises the sequence SEQ ID NO: 1. 19 . A method according to claim 14 , wherein the polypeptide comprises the sequence SEQ ID NO: 2. 20 .
