Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods and systems for verifying the identity and trustworthiness of a user of an online system are disclosed. In one embodiment, the method comprises receiving online and offline identity information for a user and comparing them to a user profile information provided by the user. Furthermore, the user's online activity in a third party online system and the user's offline activity are received. Based on the online activity and the offline activity a trustworthiness score may be calculated.

What is claimed is: 1 . A computer implemented method, comprising: receiving, by a computer, information about a first online identity of a user of a first online system, the first online identity including a first name and a last name of the user; receiving information about a second online identity of the user from one or more third party online systems, the second online identity including a first name and a last name used with an account of the user in a third party online system different than the first online system; determining a measure of difference between text of the first name and last name in the first online identity and text of the first name and last name in the second online identity; responsive to the measure of difference exceeding a threshold, determining that the first online identity is different than the second online identity; and notifying the user that the received information about the first online identity of the user does not match the second online identity. 2 . The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the information about the identity of a user further comprises at least one of: a date of birth, and an address. 3 . The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining a measure of difference between text of the first name and last name in the first online identity and text of the first name and last name in the second online identity comprises: calculating a confidence score based on an edit distance between the first name from the first online identity and the first name from the second online identity and an edit distance between the last name from the first online identity and the last name from the second online identity. 4 . The computer implemented method of claim 3 wherein the measure of difference is the confidence score. 5 . The computer implemented method of claim 1 , wherein: the information about the identity of the user further comprises a profile picture, and determining whether the first online identity is different than the second online identity further comprises: comparing the profile picture of the received information about the first online identity of the user with a profile picture from the information about the second online identity of the user received from the one or more third party online system. 6 . The computer implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving offline information about an offline identity of the user, the offline information including a first name and a last name, extracted from at least one of a driver license of the user, a passport of the user, and a government issued identification of the user; determining whether the first online identity is different than the offline identity by determining a measure of difference between the text of the first name and last name in the first online identity and text of the first name and last name in the offline identity; and responsive to the first online identity being different from the offline identity based on the measure of difference exceeding a threshold, notifying the user that the received information about the first online identity of the user does not match the offline identity of the user. 7 . The computer implemented method of claim 6 , wherein receiving offline information about the identity of the user comprises: receiving an image of the at least one document; and extracting the offline information about the identity of the user from the received image of the document. 8 . A system comprising: a processor; and a computer readable medium configured to store instructions, the instructions when executed by a processor cause the processor to: receive information about a first online identity of a user of a first online system, the first online identity including a first name and a last name of the user; receive information about a second online identity of the user from one or more third party online systems, the second online identity including a first name and a last name used with an account of the user in the third party online system different than the first online system; determine a measure of difference between text of the first name and last name in the first online identity and text of the first name and last name in the second online identity; responsive to the measure of difference exceeding a threshold, determine that the first online identity is different than the second online identity; and notify the user that the received information about the first online identity of the user does not match the second online identity. 9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the information about the identity of a user further comprises at least one of: a date of birth, and an address. 10 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the instructions for determining a measure of difference between text of the first name and last name in the first online identity and text of the first name and last name in the second online identity cause the processor to: calculate a confidence score based on an edit distance between the first name from the first online identity and the first name from the second online identity and an edit distance between the last name from the first online identity and the last name from the second online identity. 11 . The system of claim 10 wherein the measure of difference is the confidence score. 12 . The system of 8 , wherein: the information about the identity of the user further comprises a profile picture, and wherein the instruction for determining whether the first online identity is different than the second online identity further cause the processor to: compare the profile picture of the received information about the first online identity of the user with a profile picture from the information about the second online identity of the user received from the one or more third party online system. 13 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the instruction further cause the processor to: receive offline information about an offline identity of the user, the offline information including a first name and a last name, extracted from at least one of a driver license of the user, a passport of the user, and a government issued identification of the user; determine whether the first online identity is different than the offline identity by determining a measure of difference between the text of the first name and last name in the first online identity and text of the first name and last name in the offline identity; and responsive to the first online identity being different from the offline identity based on the measure of difference exceeding a threshold, notify the user that the received information about the first online identity of the user does not match the offline identity of the user. 14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the instructions for receiving offline information about the offline identity of the user cause the processor to: receive an image of the at least one document; and extract the offline information about the identity of the user from the received image of the document. 15 . A non-transitory computer readable storage medium configured to store instructions, the instructions when executed by a processor, cause the processor to: receive information about a first online identity of a user of a first online system, the first online identity including a first name and a last name of the user; receive information about a second online identity of the user from one or more third party online systems, the second online identity including a first name and a las
