Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A system and method of associating, assigning, and authenticating users with and to a personal protective equipment device is provided. A method can include receiving biometric data, processing the received biometric data, and based on the processing, associating a user with a personal protective equipment device.

What is claimed is: 1 . A method comprising: receiving biometric data; processing the received biometric data; and based on the processing, associating a user with a personal protective equipment device. 2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising, upon occurrence of a predetermined event, soliciting input of the biometric data. 3 . The method of claim 1 wherein processing the received biometric data includes locally processing the received biometric data. 4 . The method of claim 1 wherein processing the received biometric data includes transmitting the received biometric data to a remote location for remote processing. 5 . The method of claim 1 further comprising adjusting at least one setting of the personal protective equipment device to a personalized setting associated with the user. 6 . The method of claim 1 wherein the user is an unknown user. 7 . The method of claim 1 wherein processing the received biometric data includes identifying the user based on the received biometric data. 8 . The method of claim 7 wherein identifying the user based on the received biometric data includes cross-referencing the received biometric data with biometric data and associated user information stored in a memory device. 9 . The method of claim 8 further comprising updating the memory device with second biometric data and second associated user information. 10 . A system comprising: a user interface; a programmable processor; and executable control software stored on a non-transitory computer readable medium, wherein, when the user interface receives biometric data, the programmable processor and the executable control software process the received biometric data, and based on the processing, associate a user with the system. 11 . The system of claim 10 wherein the user interface includes at least one of a microphone and a fingerprint scanner. 12 . The system of claim 10 further comprising a memory device, wherein the programmable processor and the executable control software associating the user with the system includes the programmable processor and the executable control software cross-referencing the received biometric data with biometric data and associated user information stored in the memory device. 13 . The system of claim 12 wherein the user interface receives second biometric data and second associated user information, and wherein the programmable processor and the executable control software update the memory device with the second biometric data and the second associated user information. 14 . The system of claim 10 wherein the programmable processor and the executable control software adjust at least one setting of the system to a personalized setting associated with the user. 15 . A system comprising: a user interface; and a transceiver, wherein, when the user interface receives biometric data, the transceiver transmits the received biometric data to a remote location for processing and, responsive thereto, receives authentication data. 16 . The system of claim 15 wherein the user interface includes at least one of a microphone and a fingerprint scanner. 17 . The system of claim 15 wherein the transceiver transmits and receives the biometric data and the authentication data to and from, respectively, at least one of a server, a database, and a central monitoring station. 18 . The system of claim 15 wherein the transceiver receiving the authentication data includes the transceiver receiving user information associated with the received biometric data. 19 . The system of claim 15 further comprising: a programmable processor; and executable control software stored on a non-transitory computer readable medium, wherein, responsive to receiving the authentication data, the programmable processor and the executable control software associate the authentication data with the system. 20 . The system of claim 19 wherein the programmable processor and the executable control software adjust at least one setting of the system to a personalized setting associated with the authentication data.
