1 . A process for producing water-absorbing polymer particles by polymerizing a monomer solution or suspension comprising a) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer which bears acid groups and may be at least partly neutralized, b) at least one crosslinker, c) at least one initiator, d) optionally one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable with the monomer specified under a), and e) optionally one or more water-soluble polymer, comprising drying, grinding, classifying and surface postcrosslinking, which comprises coating the water-absorbing polymer particles, before, during, or after the surface postcrosslinking, with at least one basic salt of a trivalent metal cation and a monovalent carboxylic acid anion, wherein the at least one basic salt comprises one or more non-eliminable hydroxyl anion, and wherein a molar ratio of metal cation to carboxylic acid anion in the basic salt is from 0.6 to 1.2 and the amount of trivalent metal cation is from 0.0008 to 0.2 mol per 100 g of the water-absorbing polymer particles. 2 . (canceled) 3 . The process according to claim 1 , wherein the trivalent metal cation is an aluminum cation. 4 . The process according to claim 1 , wherein the monovalent carboxylic acid anion is an acetate anion. 5 . The process according to claim 1 , wherein the basic salt comprises at least one stabilizer. 6 . The process according to claim 5 , wherein the stabilizer is boric acid. 7 . The process according to claim 1 , wherein the basic salt is used as an aqueous solution. 8 . Water-absorbing polymer particles prepared by the process according to claim 1 . 9 . Water-absorbing polymer particles comprising i) at least one polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomer which bears acid groups and may be at least partly neutralized, ii) at least one polymerized crosslinker, iii) optionally one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerized with the monomer specified under and iv) optionally one or more water-soluble polymer, wherein the water-absorbing polymer particles have been coated with at least one basic salt of a trivalent metal cation and a monovalent carboxylic acid anion, wherein the at least one basic salt comprises one or more non-eliminable hydroxyl anion, and wherein a molar ratio of metal cation to carboxylic acid anion in the basic salt is from 0.6 to 1.2 and the amount of trivalent metal cation is from 0.0008 to 0.2 mol per 100 g of the water-absorbing polymer particles. 10 . (canceled) 11 . The polymer particles according to claim 9 , wherein the trivalent metal cation is an aluminum cation. 12 . The polymer particles according to claims 9 , wherein the monovalent carboxylic acid anion is an acetate anion. 13 . The polymer particles according to claim 9 , wherein the water-absorbing polymer particles have a centrifuge retention capacity of at least 15 g/g. 14 . A hygiene article comprising the water-absorbing polymer particles of claim 9 . 15 . The process of claim 1 wherein the at least one basic salt is selected from the group consisting of basic aluminum formate, basic aluminum acetate, and basic aluminum propionate. 16 . The process of claim 1 wherein the at least one basic salt comprises aluminum monoacetate.
