Abstract

An apparatus, including a user communication device which is a wireless communication device, wireless telephone, or personal digital assistant, configured for use in on-line gaming activity, further including a global positioning device which determines a position or location of the user communication device; a display capable of displaying gaming information; and a transmitter which transmits the position or location information to a computer which administers the on-line gaming activity. The computer is configured to identify the jurisdiction in which the user communication device is located based on the position or location of the communication device at the time of the placing of a bet. The bet and on-line gaming activity is allowed by the computer if the bet and on-gaming activity is allowed in the jurisdiction or is disallowed if the bet and on-gaming activity is not allowed in the jurisdiction.

First claim

What is claimed is:

1 . An apparatus, comprising:
a user communication device, wherein the user communication device is a wireless communication device, a wireless telephone, or a personal digital assistant, specially configured for use in an on-line gaming activity, further comprising:
a global positioning device, wherein the global positioning device automatically determines a position or location of the user communication device;
a display, wherein the display is capable of displaying gaming information; and
a transmitter, wherein the transmitter automatically transmits the position or location information to a computer which administers the on-line gaming activity, wherein the computer is specially configured to identify the jurisdiction in which the user communication device is located based on the position or location of the communication device at the time of the placing of a bet, wherein the bet and the on-line gaming activity is allowed by the computer if the bet and the on-gaming activity is determined to be allowed by or in the jurisdiction or the bet and the on-line gaming activity is disallowed if the bet and the on-gaming activity is determined to be not allowed by or in the jurisdiction.

2 . An apparatus, comprising:
a global positioning device, wherein the global positioning device automatically determines a position or location of the apparatus; a display, wherein the display is capable of displaying one or more virtual betting pieces, chips, or currency, for use in placing a bet; an input device for inputting or entering information regarding a placing of a bet with or using any one or more of the one or more virtual betting pieces, chips, or currency displayed; and a transmitter, wherein the transmitter transmits a bet message containing information regarding an on-line gaming activity, a bet on the on-line gaming activity, and the position or location of the apparatus, to an on-line gaming computer.

3 . An apparatus, comprising:
a receiver, wherein the receiver receives a bet message which contains information regarding a proposed bet for an on-line gaming activity, and further wherein the receiver receives information regarding a position or location of a user communication device or a user computer from which the bet message is transmitted; and an on-line gaming computer specially adapted to administer and to provide an on-line gaming activity to the user communication device or the user computer, wherein the apparatus automatically identifies the jurisdiction in which the user communication device or a user computer is located in at the time of the transmission of the bet message to the apparatus, wherein the apparatus automatically determines if the proposed bet is allowed in the jurisdiction, and further wherein the apparatus allows the placement of a bet and participation in the on-line gaming activity if the bet and the on-line gaming activity is allowed in the jurisdiction or the apparatus disallows the placement of a bet and participation in the one-line gaming activity if the bet and the on-line gaming activity is disallowed in the jurisdiction
