The present disclosure provides a system for oxygenating blood. The system may include an implantable blood pump that may draw a supply of blood from the circulatory system of a mammalian subject, such as a human being. The blood pump may provide the supply of blood to an adaptor, where the supply of blood may be supplied to either or both of a first branch or second branch. The first branch may lead to an external blood oxygenator. The oxygenator may oxygenate the blood, and the blood may be returned to the circulatory system of the mammalian subject. The second branch may bypass the oxygenator and may connect to the circulatory system of the mammalian subject. In this regard, while the blood is supplied to the second branch, the oxygenator may be disconnected and blood may be prevented from entering the first branch.

1 . (canceled) 2 . A portable lung assist system comprising: a blood pump having a pump outlet and a pump inlet configured for communication with a circulatory system of a mammalian subject at an inlet location, the blood pump being carriable by the mammalian subject; an external, portable blood oxygenator for supplementing the action of the subject's lungs having a blood inlet releasably connectable to the outlet of the blood pump and a blood outlet releasably connectable to the circulatory system of the mammalian subject at a return location; and a bypass conduit connectable to the outlet of the blood pump and to the circulatory system at the return location. 3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the blood inlet and blood outlet are releasably connectable while the blood pump and bypass conduit are connected to the circulatory system. 4 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising first and second return fittings adapted for connection to the circulatory system at the return location and adapted for respective connection to the blood outlet and bypass conduit. 5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the inlet location and return location are located within the same anatomical feature of the circulatory system. 6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the anatomical feature of the circulatory system is the pulmonary artery. 7 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the anatomical feature of the circulatory system is the right atrium. 8 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the anatomical feature of the circulatory system is the right ventricle. 9 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a dual-lumen catheter having first and second lumens, the first lumen comprising a system inlet fitting, and the second lumen comprising a system return fitting. 10 . A portable lung assist system comprising: a system inlet and system return connectable to a circulatory system of a mammalian subject at an inlet location and return location thereof, respectively; a blood pump having a pump inlet in communication with the system inlet and a pump outlet; a blood bypass having a bypass inlet in communication with the pump outlet, a bypass outlet in communication with the system return, and at least one conduit disposed between the bypass inlet and outlet and in communication therewith; and a portable blood oxygenator having a blood inlet in communication with the pump outlet and a blood outlet in communication with the system return, the portable blood oxygenator being disconnectable from the lung assist system at disconnect locations located downstream of the blood outlet and upstream of the blood inlet. 11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the portable blood oxygenator is disconnectable from the lung assist system via disconnect fittings located at the disconnect locations, and when the portable blood oxygenator is disconnected from the system, the blood pump continuously supplies blood to the blood bypass. 12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the return comprises first and second return fittings adapted for connection to the circulatory system, and the bypass outlet is in communication with the first return fitting and the blood outlet is in communication with the second return fitting. 13 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the return includes a return fitting adapted for connection to the circulatory system, and the bypass outlet and blood outlet are both in communication with the return fitting. 14 . The of claim 10 , wherein the blood bypass includes an additional blood oxygenator connected thereto between the bypass inlet and bypass return. 15 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the inlet location and return location are located within the same anatomical feature of the circulatory system. 16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the anatomical feature of the circulatory system is the pulmonary artery. 17 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the anatomical feature of the circulatory system is the right atrium. 18 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the anatomical feature of the circulatory system is the right ventricle. 19 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the inlet and return is comprised of a dual-lumen catheter having a first and second lumen, the first lumen comprises the inlet and a second lumen comprises the outlet. 20 . A method of providing respiratory assistance to a subject comprising: directing blood from a system inlet at an inlet location within the circulatory system of the subject through a blood pump, out of the subject, through a portable oxygenator and back to the circulatory system through a return at a return location within the circulatory system; disconnecting the external, portable oxygenator; directing blood through the blood pump, through a blood bypass and back to the circulatory system through the return at the return location; and reconnecting either the portable oxygenator or a different portable oxygenator. 21 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the inlet location and return location are both located at one of a right atrium, right ventricle or pulmonary artery of the circulatory system. 22 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the inlet is a first lumen of a dual-lumen catheter, and the return is a second lumen of the dual-lumen catheter.
