Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Photovoltaic or solar module frames, racks, or frame or rack components are made from a composition comprising (A) a thermoplastic polymer, particularly a thermoplastic polyolefin, (B) a reinforcing element, particularly glass fiber, (C) a non-halogen containing, intumescent flame retardant, (D) an impact-modifier, particularly a polyolefin elastomer, (E) a coupling agent, and, optionally, (F) one or more additives such as an antioxidant, UV-stabilizer, etc. These frames provide for easy assembly without the need for screws, bolts or other metal fasteners.

First claim

1 . (canceled) 2 . A composition comprising, based on the weight of the composition, (A) 10-80 wt % of a thermoplastic polymer, (B) 10-55 wt % of a reinforcing element, (C) 1-30 wt % of a non-halogen containing, intumescent flame retardant, (D) 1-20 wt % of an impact-modifier, (E) 0.001-0.5 wt % of a coupling agent, and, optionally, (F) one or more additives. 3 . The composition of claim 2 in which the thermoplastic polymer is an impact-modified polypropylene, the reinforcing element is glass fiber, the non-halogen containing, intumescent flame retardant is an organic phosphorus-based compound, the impact modifier is a polyolefin elastomer other than the IPP of (A), and the coupling agent is a bis(sulfonyl azide). 4 . A PV frame, rack, or frame or rack component comprising the composition of claim 2 . 5 . A solar panel assembly comprising a: (A) PV module comprising one or more PV cells within a plastic frame, and the frame comprising plastic front and rear base attachments, the front base attachments pivotally attached to the frame of the PV module and the rear base attachments slideably engaged with the frame of the PV module; (B) Plastic base comprising two spaced apart mounting bases joined together by a connector board, each mounting base equipped with plastic front pegs to pivotally engage the front base attachments of the frame of the PV module, and rear slots engaged in a snap-fit relationship with the rear base attachments of the PV module; (C) Plastic wind deflector engaged in a snap-fit relationship with each of the two rear base attachments; (D) Plastic junction box integral with the PV module frame; and (E) Two plastic self-aligning devices for joining adjacent PV modules to one another, each device integral with the PV module frame. 6 . The solar panel assembly of claim 5 in which the junction box comprises a first part that is integral with one of the self-aligning devices and a second part that is integral with the other self-aligning devices. 7 . The solar panel assembly of claim 5 in which the junction box is separate from the self-aligning devices. 8 . (canceled) 9 . A photovoltaic assembly comprising: (A) A solar panel module comprising a back support, a front support and an absorber layer between the front support and the back support; (B) One-piece, integrated molded frame surrounding the module; (C) A junction box integrated into the frame; (D) An entry on one end of the frame through which the module can be inserted into the frame; (E) A sealing block or lid over the entry and engaged with the frame in a snap-fit relationship; and (F) A sealant position between the lid of the frame and the inserted module.
