System and methods for positioning 3D virtual brackets on teeth for the precise positioning of conventional brackets and wire. Various reference features may be calculated for the teeth and used to calculate a position for the virtual bracket. Reference features that are calculated include curve of Spee, Andrew's plane, and a facial axis of the clinical crown for the teeth.

What is claimed is: 1 . A computer-implemented method for positioning a virtual bracket on a patient's tooth, the method comprising: receiving, using a computer, a digital data set representing a patient's teeth; generating, on a display, a graphical representation of a reference surface passing through a crown of each of the patient's teeth, the reference surface defined at least in part by one or more of a curve of Spee or an Andrew's plane corresponding to the digital data set, wherein the graphical representation is manipulable on the display by a user so as to modify the reference surface; and determining, using the computer, an initial position for the virtual bracket on the patient's tooth, wherein the virtual bracket is aligned with the graphical representation of the reference surface generated on the display. 2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the initial position comprises aligning the virtual bracket with a facial axis of the clinical crown (FACC) of the patient's tooth. 3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a slot of the virtual bracket is aligned with the graphical representation of the reference surface. 4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the graphical representation comprises one or more control points manipulable on the display by a user so as to modify the reference surface. 5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising: receiving a user input to modify one or more of a shape or a position of the reference surface; and modifying the reference surface in response to the user input. 6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising modifying a position of the virtual bracket on the patient's tooth in response to input from a user. 7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein modifying the position of the virtual bracket comprises one or more of: restricting the virtual bracket to move on a surface of the patient's tooth or restricting the virtual bracket to move along the reference surface. 8 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising testing for a collision of the virtual bracket with a tooth or another virtual bracket. 9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the digital data set represents the patient's teeth in a target arrangement. 10 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising modifying a position of a tooth represented in the digital data set in response to input from a user. 11 . A system for positioning a virtual bracket on a patient's tooth, the system comprising: a processor; and memory comprising program code that, when executed by the processor, causes the system to: receive a digital data set representing a patient's teeth; generate, on a display, a graphical representation of a reference surface passing through a crown of each of the patient's teeth, the reference surface defined at least in part by one or more of a curve of Spee or an Andrew's plane corresponding to the digital data set, wherein the graphical representation is manipulable on the display by a user so as to modify the reference surface; and determine an initial position for the virtual bracket on the patient's tooth, wherein the virtual bracket is aligned with the graphical representation of the reference surface generated on the display. 12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein determining the initial position comprises aligning the virtual bracket with a facial axis of the clinical crown (FACC) of the patient's tooth. 13 . The system of claim 11 , wherein a slot of the virtual bracket is aligned with the graphical representation of the reference surface. 14 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the graphical representation comprises one or more control points manipulable on the display by a user so as to modify the reference surface. 15 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the program code further causes the system to: receive a user input to modify one or more of a shape or a position of the reference surface; and modify the reference surface in response to the user input. 16 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the program code further causes the system to modify a position of the virtual bracket on the patient's tooth in response to input from a user. 17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein modifying the position of the virtual bracket comprises one or more of: restricting the virtual bracket to move on a surface of the patient's tooth or restricting the virtual bracket to move along the reference surface. 18 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the program code further causes the system to test for a collision of the virtual bracket with a tooth or another virtual bracket. 19 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the digital data set represents the patient's teeth in a target arrangement. 20 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the program code further causes the system to modify a position of a tooth represented in the digital data set in response to input from a user.
