A display apparatus includes: (i) a glasses-type frame that is mounted on the head of an observer; and (ii) an image display device that is attached to the frame, wherein the image display device includes (A) an image forming device, and (B) an optical device on which light emitted from the image forming device is incident, in which the light is guided, and from which the light is emitted, a light control device that adjusts an amount of external light incident from the outside is provided in a region of the optical device from which light is emitted, and the light control device includes two opposite transparent substrates, electrodes that are provided on the substrates, and an electrophoretic dispersion liquid that is sealed between the two substrates.

A display apparatus comprising: (i) a glasses-type frame that is mounted on the head of an observer; and (ii) an image display device that is attached to the frame, wherein the image display device includes (A) an image forming device, and (B) an optical device on which light emitted from the image forming device is incident, in which the light is guided, and from which the light is emitted, a light control device that adjusts an amount of external light incident from the outside is provided in a region of the optical device from which light is emitted, and the light control device includes two opposite transparent substrates, electrodes that are provided on the substrates, and an electrophoretic dispersion liquid that is sealed between the two substrates, wherein the optical device includes (a) a light guide plate in which incident light propagates while being totally reflected and from which the light is emitted; (b) a first deflection unit that deflects light incident on the light guide plate so as to be totally reflected in the light guide plate; and (c) a second deflection unit that deflects the light, which propagates in the light guide plate while being totally reflected, a plurality of times so as to be emitted from the light guide plate, wherein the second deflection unit is covered with a first one of the two substrates forming the light control device, and wherein there is a gap between the light guide plate and the first one of the substrates. 22 . The display apparatus according to claim 21 , further comprising: an illuminance sensor that measures the illuminance of an environment in which the display apparatus is located, wherein the transmittance of the light control device is controlled on the basis of the measurement result of the illuminance sensor. 23 . The display apparatus according to claim 21 , further comprising: an illuminance sensor that measures the illuminance of an environment in which the display apparatus is located, wherein the brightness of an image formed by the image forming device is controlled on the basis of the measurement result of the illuminance sensor. 24 . The display apparatus according to claim 21 , further comprising: a second illuminance sensor that measures illuminance on the basis of light which passes through the light control device from an external environment, wherein the transmittance of the light control device is controlled on the basis of the measurement result of the second illuminance sensor. 25 . The display apparatus according to claim 21 , further comprising: a second illuminance sensor that measures illuminance on the basis of light which passes through the light control device from an external environment, wherein the brightness of an image formed by the image forming device is controlled on the basis of the measurement result of the second illuminance sensor. 26 . The display apparatus according to claim 24 , wherein the second illuminance sensor is arranged closer to the observer than the optical device. 27 . The display apparatus according to claim 21 , wherein the maximum transmittance of the light control device is equal to or greater than 50% and the minimum transmittance of the light control device is equal to or less than 30%. 28 . The display apparatus according to claim 22 , wherein, when the measurement result of the illuminance sensor is equal to or greater than a predetermined value, the transmittance of the light control device is equal to or less than a predetermined value. 29 . The display apparatus according to claim 22 , wherein, when the measurement result of the illuminance sensor is equal to or less than a predetermined value, the transmittance of the light control device is equal to or greater than a predetermined value. 30 . The display apparatus according to claim 21 , wherein the light control device imparts a desired color to light passing through the light control device. 31 . The display apparatus according to claim 30 , wherein the color imparted by the light control device is variable. 32 . The display apparatus according to claim 30 , wherein the color imparted by the light control device is fixed. 33 . The display apparatus according to claim 21 , wherein the light control device is removably provided in the region of the optical device from which light is emitted. 34 . A display apparatus comprising: (i) a glasses-type frame that is mounted on the head of an observer; (ii) an image display device that is attached to the frame; and an illuminance sensor that measures the illuminance of an environment in which the display apparatus is located, wherein the image display device includes (A) an image forming device, and (B) an optical device on which light emitted from the image forming device is incident, in which the light is guided, and from which the light is emitted, a light control device that adjusts the amount of external light incident from the outside is provided in a region of the optical device from which light is emitted, and the transmittance of the light control device is controlled on the basis of the measurement result of the illuminance sensor, wherein the optical device includes (a) a light guide plate in which incident light propagates while being totally reflected and from which the light is emitted; (b) a first deflection unit that deflects light incident on the light guide plate so as to be totally reflected in the light guide plate; and (c) a second deflection unit that deflects the light, which propagates in the light guide plate while being totally reflected, a plurality of times so as to be emitted from the light guide plate, wherein the second deflection unit is covered with a first one of the two substrates forming the light control device, and wherein there is a gap between the light guide plate and the first one of the substrates. 35 . A display apparatus comprising: (i) a glasses-type frame that is mounted on the head of an observer; (ii) an image display device that is attached to the frame; and an illuminance sensor that measures the illuminance of an environment in which the display apparatus is located, wherein the image display device includes (A) an image forming device, and (B) an optical device on which light emitted from the image forming device is incident, in which the light is guided, and from which the light is emitted, a light control device that adjusts the amount of external light incident from the outside is provided in a region of the optical device from which light is emitted, and the brightness of an image formed by the image forming device is controlled on the basis of the measurement result of the illuminance sensor, wherein the optical device includes (a) a light guide plate in which incident light propagates while being totally reflected and from which the light is emitted; (b) a first deflection unit that deflects light incident on the light guide plate so as to be totally reflected in the light guide plate; and (c) a second deflection unit that deflects the light, which propagates in the light guide plate while being totally reflected, a plurality of times so as to be emitted from the light guide plate, wherein the second deflection unit is covered with a first one of the two substrates forming the light control device, and wherein there is a gap between the light guide plate and the first one of the substrates. 36 .
