Abstract

A freeze dried oral smokeless tobacco snuff or non-tobacco snuff product and a method of manufacturing the freeze dried oral smokeless tobacco snuff or non-tobacco snuff product.

First claim

1 . A freeze dried oral smokeless tobacco snuff or non-tobacco snuff product with a moisture content of less than 15 weight percent.

16 . The product according to claim 1 , wherein the product has a moisture content of less than 10 weight percent.

17 . The product according to claim 1 , wherein the product has a moisture content of less than 8 weight percent.

18 . The product according to claim 1 , wherein the product is in the form of a pouch.

19 . The product according to claim 1 , wherein the product is in loose, particulate form.

20 . The product according to claim 18 , wherein the product is packed in cans or boxes.

21 . The product according to claim 1 , wherein the product is re-moisturized either prior to use or in the mouth during use.

22 . The product according to claim 1 , wherein the oral smokeless tobacco snuff or non-tobacco snuff product is snus.

23 . A method of manufacturing a freeze dried oral smokeless tobacco snuff or non-tobacco snuff product comprising:
a) providing a mixture comprising tobacco or non-tobacco material and water; b) processing said mixture to create a processed mixture; and c) freeze drying the processed mixture.

24 . The method according to claim 23 , wherein the processing of the mixture comprises heat treatment.

25 . The method according to claim 24 , wherein the heat treatment is a pasteurization process.

26 . The method according to claim 23 , the method further comprising forming the tobacco or non-tobacco product into pouches; and packaging the pouches.

27 . The method according to claim 23 , wherein the method further comprises forming the freeze dried oral smokeless tobacco snuff or non-tobacco snuff product into portions.

28 . The method according to claim 23 , wherein the method further comprises packing the freeze dried oral smokeless tobacco snuff or non-tobacco snuff product into cans or boxes.

29 . The method according to claim 26 , wherein the forming into portions takes place prior to freeze drying and the oral smokeless tobacco snuff or non-tobacco snuff is thereafter freeze dried in the pouches.

30 . The method according to claim 23 , wherein the method further comprises adding one or more flavorants to the oral smokeless tobacco snuff or non-tobacco snuff product.

31 . The method according to claim 30 , wherein the one or more flavorants is added to the oral smokeless tobacco snuff or non-tobacco snuff product after freeze drying.
