Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The synthesis of collagen and proteoglycan in chondrocytes, such as intervertebral disc cells, articular chondrocytes and meniscal cells is promoted by administration of an extract from inflamed tissue inoculated with vaccinia virus.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1 . A method for determining or evaluating an extract isolated from inflamed tissue inoculated with vaccinia virus comprising measuring a promoting activity on the synthesis of proteoglycan and/or collagen in cultured chondrocytes by said extract as an index. 2 . A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said chondrocytes comprise intervertebral disc cells. 3 . A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein said intervertebral disc cells comprise nucleus pulposus cells and/or anulus fibrosus cells. 4 . A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein proteoglycan synthesis is promoted. 5 . A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein collagen synthesis is promoted. 6 . A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the inflamed tissue is a rabbit skin tissue. 7 . A method for determining or evaluating an extract isolated from inflamed tissue inoculated with vaccinia virus comprising measuring a regenerating activity of a cultured chondrocyte extracellular matrix by said extract as an index. 8 . A method as claimed in claim 7 wherein said cultured chondrocyte extracellular matrix is an intervertebral disc cell extracellular matrix. 9 . A method as claimed in claim 8 wherein intervertebral disc cells of said intervertebral disc cell extracellular matrix comprise nucleus pulposus cells and/or anulus fibrosus cells. 10 . A method as claimed in claim 8 wherein said intervertebral disc cell extracellular matrix is proteoglycan and/or collagen. 11 . A method as claimed in claim 7 wherein the inflamed tissue is a rabbit skin tissue. 12 . A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the cultured chondrocytes are cultured with said extract under hypoxic conditions to promote the synthesis of proteoglycan. 13 . A method as claimed in claim 12 wherein the cultured chondrocytes comprise nucleus pulposus cells. 14 . A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the cultured chondrocytes are cultured with said extract under normoxic conditions to promote the synthesis of collagen. 15 . A method as claimed in claim 14 wherein the cultured chondrocytes comprise nucleus pulposus cells and/or anulus fibrosus cells. 16 . A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the cultured chondrocytes are cultured with said extract under hypoxic conditions to promote the synthesis of collagen. 17 . A method as claimed in claim 16 wherein the cultured chondrocytes comprise nucleus pulposus cells.
