Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

There is provided a light-guide, compact collimating optical device, including a light-guide having a light-waves entrance surface, a light-waves exit surface and a plurality of external surfaces, a light-waves reflecting surface carried by the light-guide at one of the external surfaces, two retardation plates carried by light-guides on a portion of the external surfaces, a light-waves polarizing beamsplitter disposed at an angle to one of the light-waves entrance or exit surfaces, and a light-waves collimating component covering a portion of one of the retardation plates. A system including the optical device and a substrate, is also provided.

1 . A light guide, compact imaging optical system comprising; at least one display light source for producing light waves; an optical device composed of a light-waves transmitting material for collimating light waves, the device having at least one light waves entrance surface, at least two light waves exit surfaces and a plurality of external surfaces; at least two light waves collimating components, and at least two light-transmitting substrates, each substrate having at least two major surfaces parallel to each other, edges, a light waves input aperture and at least one partially reflecting surface located in the substrates; at least one optical element for coupling light waves from the optical device into the substrates by internal reflection, wherein the display light source is positioned adjacent to the entrance surface of the optical device for producing image light waves to be coupled through the entrance surface into the optical device, and the input apertures of the light-transmitting substrates are respectively positioned adjacent to the exit surfaces of the optical device for producing two images to be coupled through the input apertures of the light-transmitting substrates into the substrates, and then to be coupled by the partially reflecting surfaces out of the substrate into the eyes of a viewer, and wherein the optical device is located above, or in front of, the partially reflecting surfaces. 2 . The optical system according to claim 1 , further comprising a second display light source for providing light waves. 3 . The optical system according to claim 2 , wherein the two display sources produce two different images. 4 . The optical system according to claim 2 , wherein the optical device comprises a second entrance surface. 5 . The optical system according to claim 4 , wherein the second optical display light source is positioned adjacent to the second entrance surface of the optical device and produces image light waves coupled through the second entrance surface into the optical device. 6 . The optical system according to claim 1 , wherein light waves coupled into the optical device through the two entrance surfaces are, respectively, collimated by the two collimating components. 7 . The optical system according to claim 1 , wherein light waves entering the substrates intersect the input apertures of the light-transmitting substrates at an oblique angle to the major surfaces of the respective substrates are larger than a critical angle for effecting coupling of light waves inside the substrate by total internal reflection. 8 . The optical system according to claim 1 , further comprising a spectacles frame wherein the optical device and substrates are incorporated in the frame. 9 . The optical system according to claim 8 , wherein the spectacles frame comprises a nose bridge and the optical device is positioned over the nose bridge of the spectacles.
