A lithium sulfur cell has a cathode including Li 3 PS 4+n (0<n<9), an electrolyte, and an anode comprising lithium. A cathode for a lithium sulfur cell is also disclosed.

We claim: 1 . A lithium sulfur cell, comprising: a cathode comprising Li 3 PS 4+n (0<n<9); an electrolyte; and an anode comprising lithium. 2 . The lithium sulfur cell of claim 1 , wherein the cathode comprises Li 3 PS5. 3 . The lithium sulfur cell of claim 1 , wherein the cathode comprises Li 3 PS 6 . 4 . The lithium sulfur cell of claim 1 , wherein the cathode comprises Li 3 PS 7 . 5 . The lithium sulfur cell of claim 1 , wherein the cathode comprises Li 3 PS 8 . 6 . A cathode for a lithium sulfur cell, comprising Li 3 PS 4+n (0<n<9). 13 . The cathode of claim 12 , comprising Li 3 PS 5 . 14 . The cathode of claim 12 , comprising Li 3 PS 6 . 15 . The cathode of claim 12 , comprising Li 3 PS 7 . 16 . The cathode of claim 12 , comprising Li 3 PS 8 . 17 . The cathode of claim 12 , comprising Li 3 PS 9 . 18 . A method of making a cathode for a battery, comprising the steps of: reacting sulfur with Li 3 PS 4 in a liquid solvent to provide a composition comprising Li 3 PS 4+n (0<n<9), creating a slurry with the compound, a binder and carbon; and, forming a cathode with the slurry. 22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the solvent is at least one selected from the group consisting of tetrahydrofuran, acetonitrile, dimethoxylethane, glyme solvents and ethers.
