What is claimed is: 1 . A device for activating a mediator species via electrolysis, the device comprising: a voltage source; an anode connected to the voltage source; a cathode connected to the voltage source; and a liquid-permeable, electrically non-conductive sheath that encloses the entirety of the anode and the cathode, wherein the sheath is flexible; and wherein the sheath comprises a spongy intermediate layer configured to absorb a certain amount of washing liquor. 2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the sheath defines at least one closable opening configured to enable removal of the anode and/or the cathode. 3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the sheath also encloses the voltage source. 4 . The device of claim 3 , wherein the voltage source has a housing and the sheath is fastened to the housing. 5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein at least half of the area of the effective surface of the anode is arranged inside the anode. 6 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the anode has a plurality of channels. 7 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the anode is deformable. 8 . The device of claim 1 , wherein every first point on the surface of the anode is either exposed or rests against a second point on the surface of the anode, wherein each second point is movable relative to a corresponding first point. 9 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the anode comprises a material selected from the group consisting of steel wool, electrically conductive polymers, electrically conductive textiles, and chips. 10 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the voltage source is protected from contact with external planes in all spatial directions by padding. 11 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the voltage source comprises a generator. 12 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a sensor configured to measure at least one of conductivity, pH, temperature, acceleration, or sound. 13 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the sheath is reversibly deformable via a force that is less than the weight of the sheath. 14 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the sheath defines a first compartment that separately encloses the anode and a second compartment that separately encloses the cathode. 15 . A device for activating a mediator species via electrolysis, the device comprising: a voltage source; an anode connected to the voltage source; a cathode connected to the voltage source; and a liquid-permeable, electrically non-conductive sheath that encloses the entirety of the anode and the cathode, wherein the sheath is flexible; and wherein the anode and the cathode are arranged laterally on opposite sides of the voltage source. 16 . The device of claim 15 , wherein the voltage source is protected from contact with external planes in all spatial directions by padding. 17 . The device of claim 16 , wherein the padding comprises the anode and the sheath. 18 . The device of claim 15 , wherein the sheath is in the form of a mesh-like structure. 19 . The device of claim 15 , wherein the anode has a plurality of channels. 20 . The device of claim 15 , wherein the anode is deformable.
