Aspects of the technology relate to assisting a passenger in an autonomous vehicle without a driver. For instance, after a door of the vehicle is opened, a predetermined period of time may be waited by processors of computing devices of the vehicle. After waiting the predetermined period of time and when the vehicle's door remains open, a set of instructions for closing the vehicle's door may be played by the processors through a speaker of the vehicle. Once the door of the vehicle is closed, an announcement may be played by the processors through the speaker requesting that the passenger press a first button to initiate a ride to a destination. In response to the first button being pressed, the ride to the destination may be initiated by the processors by maneuvering the vehicle autonomously to the destination.

The invention claimed is: 1 . A method comprising: controlling, by one or more processors, an autonomous vehicle to travel to a location and pick up a passenger; and when the vehicle arrives at the location in order to pick up the passenger: confirming, by the one or more processors, that the passenger is in the vehicle; detecting, by the one or more processors, that a door of the vehicle has been closed; and in response to confirming that the passenger is in the vehicle and detecting that the door of the vehicle has been closed, generating, by the one or more processors, a request for the passenger to provide user input to confirm a destination of the vehicle. 2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising: in response to the request, receiving, by the one or more processors, the user input via a user input button of the vehicle, the received user input confirming the destination of the vehicle; and in response to the received user input, controlling, by the one or more processors, the vehicle to maneuver to the destination. 3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the request includes playing an announcement identifying the destination. 4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving a response to the request, the response confirming the destination. 5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving a response to the request that causes the vehicle to autonomously maneuver to the destination. 6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising: determining, by the one or more processors, whether the vehicle will arrive at a point of interest corresponding to the destination will be outside of operating hours. 7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising; generating, by the one or more processors, a request for confirmation by the passenger of a desire for the vehicle to continue to maneuver to the destination or change the destination. 8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising: when the vehicle is proximate to the destination, generating, by the one or more processors, an announcement indicating that the vehicle is proximate to the destination. 9 . An autonomous vehicle comprising: one or more user input buttons; a door configured to open and close; and one or more processors operably coupled to the one or more user input buttons, the one or more processors being configured to: control the vehicle to travel to a location; and when the vehicle arrives at the location in order to pick up a passenger: confirm that the passenger is in the vehicle; detect that the door has been closed; and in response to confirming that the passenger is in the vehicle and detecting that the door of the vehicle has been closed, generate a request for the passenger to provide user input via the one or more user input buttons to confirm a destination of the vehicle. 10 . The autonomous vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: receive the user input via one of the one or more user input buttons in response to the request, the received user input confirming the destination of the vehicle; and in response to the received user input, control the vehicle to maneuver to the destination. 11 . The autonomous vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to generate the request by playing an announcement identifying the destination. 12 . The autonomous vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to receive a response to the request, the response confirming the destination. 13 . The autonomous vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to receive a response to the request that causes the vehicle to autonomously maneuver to the destination. 14 . The autonomous vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to determine whether the vehicle will arrive at a point of interest corresponding to the destination will be outside of operating hours. 15 . The autonomous vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to generate a request for confirmation by the passenger of a desire for the vehicle to continue to maneuver to the destination or change the destination. 16 . The autonomous vehicle of claim 14 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to determine when the vehicle is proximate to the destination and generate an announcement indicating that the vehicle is proximate to the destination. 17 . A system comprising: one or more user input buttons; and one or more processors operably coupled to the one or more user input buttons, the one or more processors being configured to: control an autonomous vehicle to travel to a location; and when the vehicle arrives at the location in order to pick up a passenger: confirm that the passenger is in the vehicle; detect that a door of the vehicle has been closed; and in response to confirming that the passenger is in the vehicle and detecting that the door of the vehicle has been closed, generate a request for the passenger to provide user input via the one or more user input buttons to confirm a destination of the vehicle. 18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: receive the user input via one of the one or more user input buttons in response to the request, the received user input confirming the destination of the vehicle; and in response to the received user input, control the vehicle to maneuver to the destination. 19 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to generate the request by playing an announcement identifying the destination. 20 . The system of claim 17 , wherein the one or more processors are further configured to receive a response to the request via the one or more user input buttons, the response confirming the destination.
