Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A synthetic identity detection network may include a communications interface, one or more processors, and a memory having instructions stored thereon. The instructions cause the processors to receive a data inquiry from a requesting system. The data inquiry may include personally identifiable information (PII) data associated with a user. The instructions cause the processors to match the PII data to a plurality of user identities. Each user identity may be associated with at least a portion of the PII data. The instructions cause the processors to identify account statuses associated with accounts associated with the user identities. The instructions cause the processors to generate a code based at least in part on a count of the user identities and the account statuses. The code provides an indication of a likelihood of the user being a synthetic identity. The instructions cause the processors to transmit the code to the requesting system.

What is claimed is: 1 . A synthetic identity scoring system, comprising: a communications interface; one or more processors; and a memory having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by the one or more processors cause the one or more processors to: receive personally identifiable information (PII) data associated with a user; provide a first plurality of identity inquiries to a data management system, wherein each of the first plurality of identity inquiries is based on a plurality of data elements identified from the PII data; receive, from the data management system, results for the first plurality of identity inquiries; perform an entity resolution process on the PII data to identify a person linked to the PII data; provide a second plurality of identity inquiries to the data management system, wherein each of the second plurality of identity inquiries is associated with the person linked to the PII data; receive, from the data management system, results for the second plurality of identity inquiries; generate an identity confidence score based on the results for the first plurality of identity inquiries and the results for the second plurality of identity inquiries; and provide the identity confidence score to a requesting computer device that originally provided the PII data. 2 . The synthetic identity scoring system of claim 1 , wherein: develop a first component of the identity confidence score based on the results for the first plurality of identity inquiries; develop a second component of the identity confidence score based on the results for the second plurality of identity inquiries; and combine the first component and the second component to generate the identity confidence score. 3 . The synthetic identity scoring system of claim 1 , wherein: the plurality of data elements comprise at least one of a number of user identities associated with an email address, a number of accounts closed for cause, an indication of whether a taxpayer identifier was associated with a deceased individual, or a type of mailing address. 4 . The synthetic identity scoring system of claim 1 , wherein: each of the first plurality of identity inquiries comprises at least two of the plurality of data elements and a functional relationship between the at least two of the plurality of data elements. 5 . The synthetic identity scoring system of claim 1 , wherein: the identity confidence score comprises a numerical score. 6 . The synthetic identity scoring system of claim 1 , further comprising: determine the plurality of data elements from the PII data for use in scoring the PII data. 7 . The synthetic identity scoring system of claim 1 , wherein: the requesting computer device is associated with one or both of a people and an entity that wants an indication of whether a particular user interacting with the one or both of the person and the entity has provided a real or synthetic identity. 8 . A method of generating an identity confidence score, comprising: receiving, at a synthetic identity scoring system, personally identifiable information (PII) data associated with a user; providing, by the synthetic identity scoring system, a first plurality of identity inquiries to a data management system, wherein each of the first plurality of identity inquiries is based on a plurality of data elements identified from the PII data; receiving, by the synthetic identity scoring system and from the data management system, results for the first plurality of identity inquiries; performing, by the synthetic identity scoring system, an entity resolution process on the PII data to identify a person linked to the PII data; providing, by the synthetic identity scoring system, a second plurality of identity inquiries to the data management system, wherein each of the second plurality of identity inquiries is associated with the person linked to the PII data; receiving, by the synthetic identity scoring system and from the data management system, results for the second plurality of identity inquiries; generating, by the synthetic identity scoring system, an identity confidence score based on the results for the first plurality of identity inquiries and the results for the second plurality of identity inquiries; and providing, by the synthetic identity scoring system, the identity confidence score to a requesting computer device that originally provided the PII data. 9 . The method of generating an identity confidence score of claim 8 , wherein: performing the entity resolution process comprises: validating at least some of the PII data; performing a candidate search based on the validated PII data; receiving a number of candidate results; and scoring each candidate result to identify the person linked to the PII data. 10 . The method of generating an identity confidence score of claim 9 , wherein: validating the at least some of the PII data comprises scrubbing the PII data for default values and incorrect values for one or more data fields. 11 . The method of generating an identity confidence score of claim 9 , wherein: the PII data comprises tax payer identification numbers; and validating the at least some of the PII data comprises scanning the tax payer identification numbers for invalid values. 12 . The method of generating an identity confidence score of claim 9 , wherein: performing the candidate search comprises searching one or more databases for financial accounts that match the validated PII data. 13 . The method of generating an identity confidence score of claim 9 , wherein: the PII data comprises a name; and performing the candidate search comprises at least one of tokenizing the name, splitting the name by spaces, or omitting tokens under a predefined length. 14 . The method of generating an identity confidence score of claim 9 , wherein: performing the entity resolution process further comprises identifying one or more financial accounts associated with the person linked to the PII data, wherein data from the one or more financial accounts is used in the second plurality of inquiries. 15 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by one or more processors of a synthetic identity scoring system, cause the synthetic identity scoring system to: receive personally identifiable information (PII) data associated with a user; provide a first plurality of identity inquiries to a data management system, wherein each of the first plurality of identity inquiries is based on a plurality of data elements identified from the PII data; receive, from the data management system, results for the first plurality of identity inquiries; perform an entity resolution process on the PII data to identify a person linked to the PII data; provide a second plurality of identity inquiries to the data management system, wherein each of the second plurality of identity inquiries is associated with the person linked to the PII data; receive, from the data management system, results for the second plurality of identity inquiries; generate an identity confidence score based on the results for the first plurality of identity inquiries and the results for the second plurality of identity inquiries; and provide the identity confidence score to a requesting computer device that originally provided the PII data. 16 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the instructions further cause the synthetic identity scoring system to: determine the plurality of d
