The invention claimed is: 1 . A scanner for scanning a quality assurance (QA) test slide as part of a stain QA method, the scanner comprising: a housing defining an interior of the scanner; a slide holder within the housing and configured to receive a QA test slide having a rear face and an opposing front face that each extend between opposing side edges; a digital camera within the housing and arranged to capture an image of the QA test slide when the QA test slide is located in the slide holder; and a light source within the housing and arranged to illuminate the QA test slide when the QA test slide is located in the slide holder, the interior of the scanner diffusely reflecting light from the light source so that the light source illuminates both the rear face and the opposing front face of the QA test slide uniformly at the same time when the QA test slide is located in the slide holder. 2 . The scanner as claimed in claim 1 , wherein a portion of the housing surrounding the slide holder receives light from the light source and is configured to act as a light integrating cylinder. 3 . The scanner as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the housing has an inner surface that receives light from the light source and wherein the inner surface is configured to reflect the light diffusely. 4 . The scanner as claimed in claim 1 , wherein interior parts of the scanner have white surfaces. 5 . The scanner as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the digital camera has a lens with a focal plane and the slide holder is arranged to position the QA test slide at the focal plane. 6 . The scanner as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the slide holder is configured to limit the position of the QA test slide relative to the field of view of the digital camera so that a specific part of the QA test slide is within the field of view of the digital camera. 7 . The scanner as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the housing defines a slot aligned with the slide holder and wherein the slide holder is configured to slidingly receive the QA test slide so that the QA test slide can manually be inserted into and withdrawn from the scanner. 8 . The scanner as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the scanner includes a switch arranged to be actuable by the QA test slide being received in the slide holder, and wherein actuation of the switch turns on the light source and/or starts image capture by the digital camera. 9 . The scanner as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the light source extends in a ring around the slide holder. 10 . The scanner as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the scanner has no exterior control items. 11 . The scanner as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the scanner has a cable including a connector for attaching the scanner to a computer and wherein the cable is arranged to transmit digital image data from the digital camera. 12 . The scanner as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the digital camera has a field of view and wherein a red, a green and a blue reference colour patch are positioned within the field of view on one or more parts of the scanner. 13 . The scanner as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the slide holder includes a mask defining a mask aperture therein, and wherein the mask is arranged to permit the transmission of light through the QA test slide only via the mask aperture. 14 . A method of using a scanner to scan a quality assurance (QA) test slide during a stain QA method for a stain used for staining samples, comprising: inserting a QA test slide into a slide holder of the scanner, the scanner having housing, the housing having an interior surface with a concave curvature; the QA test slide having a rear face and an opposing front face, the QA test slide including on the front face a piece of biopolymer material that has been stained using the stain and a machine readable code; activating an annular light source so that light from the light source is received on and diffusely reflected from the interior surface of the housing so as to illuminate the rear face and the front face of the QA test slide at the same time; capturing an image of the piece of biopolymer material and the machine readable code using a digital camera; and removing the QA test slide from the scanner. 15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein inserting the QA test slide turns on the light source within the scanner to illuminate the rear face and the front face of the QA test slide and wherein removing the QA test slide turns off the light source. 16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein inserting the QA test slide starts image capture by the digital camera and wherein removing the QA test slide stops image capture by the digital camera. 17 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising: transmitting digital image data of the image captured by the digital camera from the scanner to a computer. 18 . The method of claim 14 , wherein said capturing an image further comprises capturing an image of a red, a green and a blue reference colour patch. 19 . The method of claim 14 , wherein said capturing an image further comprises capturing an image of a black reference and a white reference. 20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the black reference is provided on the QA test slide. 21 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the white reference is provided by reflection from a white part of the QA test slide. 22 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the white reference is provided by transmission of white light through the QA test slide. 23 . The scanner as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the light source is an annular light source. 24 . The scanner as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising: the housing comprising a sidewall extending between a top part and an opposing base, the sidewall comprising a cylindrical portion having an interior surface with a laterally extending concave curvature that longitudinally extends between an upper end toward the top part and an opposing lower end toward the base, the interior surface of the cylindrical portion bounding a first portion of the interior; the slide holder being disposed within the first portion of the interior and spaced apart from cylindrical portion of the sidewall; and the light source being disposed between the cylindrical portion of the sidewall and slide holder so as to be at a distance from the slide holder, wherein the interior surface of cylindrical portion having the concave curvature receives light from the light source and is configured to reflect the light diffusely so that the light source uniformly illuminates both the rear face and the opposing front face of the QA test slide when the QA test slide is located in the slide holder.
