Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Instruments and related methods for breaking reduction tabs are disclosed herein, e.g., for breaking reduction tabs of a bone anchor or other implant. In some embodiments, the instrument can be configured to minimize the space needed to operate the instrument. For example, the instrument can be configured to receive a reduction tab that is to be broken while the instrument is coaxially positioned with respect to a bone anchor receiver to which the reduction tab is attached. As another example, the instrument can have a maximum outer transverse dimension that is less than, equal to, or only slightly greater than a corresponding dimension of a bone anchor from which a reduction tab is to be broken. Guide rods for positioning a tab breaker instrument over a reduction tab are also disclosed.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1 . An instrument for breaking reduction tabs, the instrument comprising: an elongate shaft with a distal opening formed therein and configured to receive a reduction tab; a sleeve disposed concentrically around the elongate shaft; and a cap that retains the elongate shaft within the sleeve; wherein the distal opening is defined between an outer surface of the elongate shaft and an inner surface of a shroud extending distally from a body portion of elongate shaft, and wherein a central longitudinal axis of the sleeve and a central longitudinal axis of the elongate shaft are collinear with one another when the instrument is actuated to break the reduction tab. 2 . The instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a first retention element disposed in association with the distal opening to retain a broken reduction tab within the distal opening. 3 . The instrument of claim 2 , wherein the first retention element comprises a cantilevered beam having a contact tip that projects radially-inward from the beam. 4 . The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the elongate shaft defines an inner cannulation that is coaxial with a cannulation of the cap. 5 . The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the distal opening is formed as a negative of a section of a tube. 6 . The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the shroud is connected to the body portion of the elongate shaft by opposed struts. 7 . The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the shroud defines a partial tube. 8 . The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the instrument includes a chamber defined between the elongate shaft and the sleeve, the chamber being in communication with the distal opening and configured to store broken reduction tabs. 9 . The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the cap includes a tubular boss configured to be received within a proximal end of the sleeve to center the sleeve coaxially with the elongate shaft. 10 . The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the sleeve and the elongate shaft are configured to remain stationary relative to one another when actuating the instrument to break the reduction tab. 11 . The instrument of claim 1 , wherein the elongate shaft remains parallel with the reduction tab received in the distal opening during actuation of the instrument to break the reduction tab. 12 . The instrument of claim 1 , wherein a radial dimension of the opening is a difference between an inside diameter of the shroud and an outside diameter of the elongate shaft. 13 . The instrument of claim 1 , wherein a radially inward-facing surface of the shroud is curved with respect to a central longitudinal axis of the elongate shaft. 14 . An instrument for breaking reduction tabs, the instrument comprising: an elongate shaft with a distal opening formed therein and configured to receive a reduction tab; a sleeve disposed concentrically around the elongate shaft; and a cap that retains the elongate shaft within the sleeve; wherein the distal opening is defined between an outer surface of the elongate shaft and an inner surface of a shroud extending distally from a body portion of elongate shaft, and wherein the sleeve and the elongate shaft are configured to remain stationary relative to one another when actuating the instrument to break the reduction tab. 15 . The instrument of claim 3 , wherein the elongate shaft remains parallel with the reduction tab received in the distal opening during actuation of the instrument to break the reduction tab. 16 . The instrument of claim 3 , further comprising a first retention element disposed in association with the distal opening to retain a broken reduction tab within the distal opening. 17 . The instrument of claim 16 , wherein the first retention element comprises a cantilevered beam having a contact tip that projects radially-inward from the beam. 18 . An instrument for breaking reduction tabs, the instrument comprising: an elongate shaft with a distal opening formed therein and configured to receive a reduction tab; a sleeve disposed concentrically around the elongate shaft; and a cap that retains the elongate shaft within the sleeve; wherein the distal opening is defined between an outer surface of the elongate shaft and an inner surface of a shroud extending distally from a body portion of elongate shaft, and wherein a radially inward-facing surface of the shroud is curved with respect to a central longitudinal axis of the elongate shaft. 19 . The instrument of claim 18 , wherein the sleeve and the elongate shaft are collinear with one another when the instrument is actuated to break the reduction tab. 20 . The instrument of claim 18 , wherein the elongate shaft remains parallel with the reduction tab received in the distal opening during actuation of the instrument to break the reduction tab.
