Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A medium conveying apparatus includes a first optical sensor located on an upper part of the housing and in a central part of the housing in a direction perpendicular to a medium conveying direction, a second optical sensor located on an upper part of the housing and on a side of the first optical sensor in the direction perpendicular to the medium conveying direction, and a processor to detect a folding of a medium based on the first signal or the second signal, and stop feeding of the medium by the feed roller in accordance with a detection result of the folding of the medium. The first light emitter emits first light toward a downstream side of the medium in the medium conveying direction, and the second light emitter emits second light toward an upstream side of the medium in the medium conveying direction.

What is claimed is: 1 . A medium conveying apparatus comprising: a housing; a medium tray; a first roller; a second roller facing the first roller, to separate a medium on the medium tray; a motor to generate a driving force for driving the second roller; an optical sensor located on an upper part of the housing, and including a light emitter for emitting light and a light receiver for generating a signal based on receiving the light; and a processor to detect an abnormality of the medium based on the signal, wherein the processor interrupts the driving force from the motor to the second roller, to cause the second roller to be driven by the first roller, when the abnormality of the medium is detected. 2 . The medium conveying apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the processor temporarily resets the medium to the medium tray before causing the second roller to be driven by the first roller, and causes the second roller to be driven by the first roller, and then refeeds the medium when the abnormality of the medium is detected. 3 . The medium conveying apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the optical sensor is located in a central part of the housing in a direction perpendicular to a medium conveying direction, and further comprising a second optical sensor located on an upper part of the housing and on a side spaced apart from the first optical sensor in the direction perpendicular to the medium conveying direction, and including a second light emitter for emitting second light and a second light receiver for generating a second signal based on receiving the second light, wherein the processor detects the abnormality of the medium based on the second signal. 4 . The medium conveying apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the second optical sensor is located on an upstream side of the optical sensor in the medium conveying direction. 5 . The medium conveying apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a pressing member to press the medium placed on the medium tray, wherein the optical sensor is located on an upstream side of the pressing member in the medium conveying direction. 6 . The medium conveying apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the first roller is a feed roller to sequentially feed the medium placed on the medium tray from a lowermost side. 7 . The medium conveying apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising a medium detection sensor located on a downstream side of the second roller in the medium conveying direction, wherein, when the medium exists at a position of the medium detection sensor, the processor does not detect the abnormality of the medium. 8 . The medium conveying apparatus according to claim 3 , wherein the processor detects the abnormality of the medium by comparing a signal value of the signal at a predetermined timing with a signal value of the signal or a signal value of the second signal at another predetermined timing. 9 . The medium conveying apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the optical sensor generates the signal according to a distance from an object existing at a facing position of the optical sensor, the processor detects a loaded amount of the medium on the medium tray based on the signal, and the processor changes a sensitivity to detect the abnormality of the medium based on the loaded amount. 10 . The medium conveying apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising an ultrasonic sensor including an ultrasonic transmitter and an ultrasonic receiver to generate an ultrasonic signal corresponding to an ultrasonic wave received by the ultrasonic receiver, wherein the processor detects multi-feed of the medium based on the ultrasonic signal, and the processor changes a sensitivity to detect the abnormality of the medium based on a detection result of multi-feed of the medium. 11 . The medium conveying apparatus according to claim 1 , further comprising two medium sensors to detect the medium, respectively, wherein the processor detects a skew of the medium based on a time difference between a time when the medium passes through a first one of the two medium sensors and a time when the medium passes through a second one of the two medium sensors, and the processor changes a sensitivity to detect the abnormality of the medium based on a detection result of a skew of the medium. 12 . The medium conveying apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the processor does not detect the abnormality of the medium when a variation of a signal value of the signal is greater than a threshold value. 13 . The medium conveying apparatus according to claim 3 , further comprising a side guide provided on the medium tray in such a way as to be movable in the direction perpendicular to the medium conveying direction, for regulating a width direction of the medium, wherein a height of the side guide is greater than a maximum loading capacity of the medium on the medium tray, and the processor does not detect the abnormality of the medium based on the second signal, when a height of the medium detected based on the second signal is greater than the maximum loading capacity. 14 . A method for separating a medium, comprising: separating the medium on a medium tray by a second roller facing a first roller; emitting light by a light emitter of an optical sensor located on an upper part of a housing; generating a signal based on receiving the light by a light receiver of the first optical sensor; detecting an abnormality of the medium based on the signal; and interrupting a driving force for driving the second roller from a motor to generate the driving force to the second roller, to cause the second roller to be driven by the first roller when the abnormality of the medium is detected. 15 . The method according to claim 14 , wherein a driving force for driving the roller from a motor to the roller is interrupted, to cause the second roller to be driven by the first roller. 16 . The method according to claim 14 , wherein, the medium is temporarily reset to the medium tray before causing the second roller to be driven by the first roller, the second roller is then driven by the first roller, and then the medium is refed when the abnormality of the medium is detected. 17 . A computer-readable, non-transitory medium storing a computer program, wherein the computer program causes a medium conveying apparatus including a housing, a medium tray, a first roller, a second roller, located to face the first roller, to separate a medium on the medium tray, a motor to generate a driving force for driving the second roller, and an optical sensor located on an upper part of the housing, and including a light emitter for emitting light and a light receiver for generating a signal based on receiving the light, to execute a process, the process comprising: detecting an abnormality of the medium based on the signal; and interrupting the driving force from the motor to the second roller, to cause the second roller to be driven by the first roller when the abnormality of the medium is detected. 18 . The computer-readable, non-transitory medium according to claim 17 , wherein, the medium is temporarily reset to the medium tray before causing the second roller to be driven by the first roller, the second roller is then driven by the first roller, and then the medium is refed when the abnormality of the medium is detected.
