Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method and apparatus are disclosed that assist a user in performing proper setup of a vehicle suspension. A user may utilize a device equipped with an image sensor to assist the user in proper setup of a vehicle suspension. The device executes an application that prompts the user for input and instructs the user to perform a number of steps for adjusting the suspension components. In one embodiment, the application does not communicate with sensors on the vehicle. In another embodiment, the application may communicate with various sensors located on the vehicle to provide feedback to the device during the setup routine. In one embodiment, the device may analyze a digital image of a suspension component to provide feedback about a physical characteristic of the component.

What is claimed is: 1 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium including instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform steps for adjusting an operational characteristic of a rear suspension component of a vehicle the steps comprising: sensing said operational characteristic of said rear suspension component of said vehicle to obtain a sensed operational characteristic of said rear suspension component, said sensed operational characteristic of said rear suspension determined, at least partially, using a sensor coupled with said rear suspension component, said sensed operational characteristic of said rear suspension component comprised, at least partially, of a plurality of readings from said sensor corresponding to positions of said rear suspension component, said sensor coupled with a memory for storing said plurality of readings from said sensor, said memory coupled with said processor, said processor calculating a force applied to said rear suspension component based on a difference between said plurality of readings from said sensor; and determine, by said processor, an adjustment to the rear suspension component based on said sensed operational characteristic of said rear suspension component and said force calculated by said processor, said adjustment performed by said processor controlling an electronic signal to a valve assembly of said rear suspension component, wherein said valve assembly of said rear suspension component is operable, in response to said electronic signal, to being modulated to adjust damping characteristics of said rear suspension component. 2 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein said sensor coupled with said rear suspension component is an accelerometer. 3 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 2 , wherein said accelerometer coupled with said rear suspension component is a tri-axial accelerometer. 4 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein said sensed operational characteristic is determined, at least partially, by taking a derivative of an extension acceleration of said rear suspension component. 5 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , wherein said sensed operational characteristic of said rear suspension component is determined, at least partially, by: utilizing an image sensor to capture a digital image of said rear suspension component; and analyzing said digital image using a computer-implemented object recognition process to determine a location of an indicator member coupled with said rear suspension component. 6 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by said processor, cause said processor to perform the steps of: receiving a component identifier associated with said rear suspension component; and querying a database to retrieve product information about said rear suspension component. 7 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 1 , further comprising instructions that, when executed by said processor, cause said processor to perform the steps of: displaying, on a display of a device, a graphical overlay associated with said rear suspension component, wherein said graphical overlay indicates an alignment and an orientation for a live image of said rear suspension component viewed using an image sensor of said device; and capturing a digital image when a user indicates that said live image of said rear suspension component matches an alignment and an orientation indicated by said graphical overlay. 8 . A system for adjusting a rear suspension component of a vehicle, comprising: a sensor coupled with said rear suspension component an image sensor; a display; a memory storing an application; and a processor coupled to said memory, said image sensor, and said display, wherein, when executing said application, said processor is configured to: receive a digital image of said rear suspension component; and determine, by said processor, an adjustment to said rear suspension component based on said location of said indicator member with respect to said plurality of pixels associated with said portion of said rear suspension component, said adjustment performed by said processor controlling an electronic signal to a valve assembly of said rear suspension component, wherein said valve assembly of said rear suspension component is operable, in response to said electronic signal, to being modulated to adjust damping characteristics of said rear suspension component. 9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein said sensor coupled with said rear suspension component is an accelerometer. 10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein said accelerometer coupled with said rear suspension component is a tri-axial accelerometer. 11 . The system of claim 8 , wherein said processor is further configured to: determine an operational characteristic of said rear suspension component. 12 . The system of claim 8 , wherein said processor is further configured to: determine an operational characteristic of said rear suspension component, at least partially, by taking a derivative of an extension acceleration of said rear suspension component. 13 . The system of claim 8 , wherein said processor is further configured to: receive a component identifier associated with said rear suspension component; and query a database to retrieve product information about said rear suspension component. 14 . The system of claim 8 , wherein said processor is further configured to: display, on said display, a graphical overlay associated with said rear suspension component, wherein said graphical overlay indicates an alignment and an orientation for a live image of said rear suspension component viewed using an image sensor of said device; and capture said digital image when a user indicates that said live image of said rear suspension component matches said alignment and said orientation indicated by said graphical overlay. 15 . The system of claim 9 , wherein said processor is further configured to: convert said digital image from a color format into a grayscale format. 16 . The system of claim 8 , wherein a size of said digital image is based on physical characteristics of said rear suspension component. 17 . The system of claim 8 , wherein said processor is further configured to: determine a rebound damping setting of said rear suspension component. 18 .
