Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present technology is generally directed to adjustable shunting systems for draining fluid from a first body region to a second body region. The adjustable shunting systems include a flow control plate or cartridge for controlling the flow of fluid through the system. For example, the flow control plate can include a shape memory actuation assembly having one or more nitinol actuators for controlling the flow of fluid through the system. The flow control plate can further include a plurality of discrete sheets or layers adhered together to encase the shape memory actuation assembly. The discrete sheets or layers can form flow channels for directing fluid through the flow control plate.

We claim: 1 . A flow control cartridge for use with an implantable shunting system for treating a patient, the flow control cartridge comprising: a shape memory actuator, wherein the shape memory actuator includes a first actuation element, a second actuation element, and a gating element; a first sheet having a cavity sized and shaped to receive the shape memory actuator; and a second sheet forming a top or bottom of the flow control cartridge and coupled to the first sheet to at least partially enclose the cavity, wherein the second sheet includes an aperture that permits fluid to flow into and/or out of the cavity, wherein the first actuation element, in response to being actuated with laser energy, is configured to selectively move the gating element to and/or toward a first position relative to the aperture, and the second actuation element, in response to being actuated with laser energy, is configured to selectively move the gating element to and/or toward a second position relative to the aperture. 2 . The flow control cartridge of claim 1 wherein the shape memory actuator is configured to at least partially control the flow of fluid through the flow control cartridge by controlling the flow of fluid through the aperture. 3 . The flow control cartridge of claim 1 wherein the first sheet and the second sheet are welded together. 4 . The flow control cartridge of claim 1 wherein the first sheet and the second sheet are composed of the same material. 5 . The flow control cartridge of claim 1 wherein the first sheet and the second sheet are composed of a non-optically transparent material. 6 . The flow control cartridge of claim 1 wherein the shape memory actuator is composed of Nitinol. 7 . The flow control cartridge of claim 1 wherein the first position is associated with a first fluid resistance through the flow control cartridge, and wherein the second position is associated with a second fluid resistance through the flow control cartridge that is different than the first fluid resistance. 8 . An adjustable shunting system for treating a patient, the system comprising: an elongated housing extending between a first end portion and a second end portion, the elongated housing including a first opening at the first end portion or the second end portion to permit fluid to flow into and/or out of the elongated housing, a second opening at the other of the first end portion or the second end portion to permit fluid to flow into and/or out of the elongated housing, a chamber fluidly coupled to the first opening, and one or more fluid conduits fluidly coupling the chamber and the second opening; and a flow control cartridge positioned within the chamber, the flow control cartridge including a shape memory actuator configured to at least partially control the flow of fluid through the flow control cartridge, a first sheet having a cavity sized and shaped to receive the shape memory actuator, and a second sheet forming a top or bottom of the flow control cartridge and coupled to the first sheet to at least partially enclose the cavity, wherein the second sheet includes an aperture that permits fluid to flow into and/or out of the cavity, wherein the flow control cartridge is configured to at least partially control a fluid resistance through the elongated housing. 9 . The system of claim 8 wherein the first sheet and the second sheet are composed of a first material, and wherein the elongated housing is composed of a second material that is different than the first material. 10 . The system of claim 9 wherein the first material is more rigid than the second material. 11 . The system of claim 9 wherein the first material includes a metal and the second material is silicone. 12 . The system of claim 9 wherein the shape memory actuator is composed of Nitinol. 13 . The system of claim 8 wherein the system is configured such that fluid flowing between the first opening and the second opening must flow through the flow control cartridge. 14 . The system of claim 8 wherein the system is an adjustable glaucoma shunt sized and shaped to shunt fluid from an anterior chamber of a patient's eye.
