Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

The present invention relates to automotive interface systems and methods. In one embodiment, an automotive interface system includes a steering wheel and an integrated interpolated variable impedance array that comprises a grid of sensing elements. The sensing elements are configured to power on simultaneously and to simultaneously generate multiple currents along multiple current paths in response to sensing a touch wherein the amount of current generated by a sensing element of the grid is directly proportional to the force applied by the touch. The automotive interface system also includes an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and a processor communicatively coupled to the interpolated variable impedance array that are configured to receive the multiple currents along multiple current paths and determine a location, a duration, an area, and a force of the touch from the multiple currents along multiple current paths.

What is claimed is: 1 . An interface system, comprising: an interpolated variable impedance array comprising a group of controls and a grid of sensing elements configured to generate multiple currents along multiple current paths based on detection of a touch input at a control of the group of controls, wherein the group of controls comprise haptic feedback devices and the interpolated variable impedance array is associated with a vehicle and the touch input is received from a driver of the vehicle; and an analog-to-digital converter and a processor communicatively coupled to the interpolated variable impedance array and configured to determine information related to the touch input based on the multiple currents along the multiple current paths, wherein, based on the information related to the touch input and continuous pressure patterns associated with the touch input, the processor; selectively outputs a safety measure to the driver, and determines a force profile that defines a type and amount of feedback output in response to the touch input. 2 . The interface system of claim 1 , wherein the haptic feedback devices output the feedback based on the touch input. 3 . The interface system of claim 2 , wherein the feedback is provided to the driver. 4 . The interface system of claim 1 , wherein the information related to the touch input comprises feedback data. 5 . The interface system of claim 4 , wherein the feedback data is real-time feedback data. 6 . The interface system of claim 4 , wherein the feedback data is non-visual feedback data. 7 . The interface system of claim 4 , wherein the feedback data is provided as auditory data. 8 . The interface system of claim 1 , wherein the touch input comprises data indicative of a function of the control to which the touch input is applied. 9 . The interface system of claim 8 , wherein, based on receipt of a pressure applied at the control, execution of the control is performed. 10 . The interface system of claim 8 , wherein the data indicative of the function is provided as continuous feedback during receipt of the touch input. 11 . The interface system of claim 1 , wherein the interpolated variable impedance array is disposed on or about a steering wheel. 12 . The interface system of claim 1 , wherein the interpolated variable impedance array is disposed at an outer area of a steering wheel. 13 . An interface system, comprising: a processor; and one or more control surfaces that comprise an interpolated variable impedance touch sensor array communicatively coupled to the processor, where at least one control surface of the one or more control surfaces comprises a haptic feedback device, and wherein the processor is programmed to receive touch input from the interpolated variable impedance touch sensor array, the interpolated variable impedance touch sensor array is associated with a vehicle and the touch input is received from a driver of the vehicle, wherein based on receipt of the touch input, the processor is configured to: determine continuous pressure patterns that comprise variable impedance touch sensor array data, selectively output a safety measure to the driver; generate a force profile based on the variable impedance touch sensor array data, and facilitate output of feedback data based on the force profile. 14 . The interface system of claim 13 , wherein the haptic feedback device provides the feedback data based on the touch input. 15 . The interface system of claim 13 , wherein the feedback data is real-time feedback data. 16 . The interface system of claim 13 , wherein the feedback data is non-visual feedback data. 17 . The interface system of claim 13 , wherein the feedback data is provided as auditory data. 18 . The interface system of claim 13 , wherein the one or more control surfaces are disposed on or about a steering wheel of the vehicle. 19 . The interface system of claim 18 , wherein, based on the touch input, the interpolated variable impedance touch sensor array: determines respective patterns of touch input at the one or more control surfaces; and controls one or more components of the vehicle based on the respective patterns. 20 . The interface system of claim 13 , wherein the interpolated variable impedance touch sensor array comprises sensor elements, and wherein adjacent sensor elements are spaced apart at a defined distance.
