Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A coupling part with integrated aerosol generator for use in a breathing circuit, comprising a housing ( 10 ) enclosing a cavity (V), having a first opening at a first end prepared for direct or indirect connection to a ventilator, a second opening at a second end, which is suitable for direct or indirect connection to a patient line or an endotracheal tube, wherein an aerosol generator ( 20 ) is integrated in one side of the housing and is suitable for delivering an aerosolised liquid, in particular a medicament.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

The invention claimed is: 1 . A coupling part for use in a breathing circuit, comprising: a housing enclosing a cavity and having: a first arm forming a first hollow cylindrical channel defining a first opening configured for direct or indirect connection to a ventilator; a second arm forming a second hollow cylindrical channel defining a second opening configured for direct or indirect connection to a patient line or an endotracheal tube, wherein the second arm is perpendicular to the first arm, and wherein the first hollow cylindrical channel coincides with the second hollow cylindrical channel to form an unobstructed air duct; and a third arm formed by an aerosol generator integrated into the housing and configured to deliver an aerosolised liquid, wherein the aerosol generator includes a mesh membrane, wherein an outlet direction of the aerosolized liquid is normal to the mesh membrane and coincides with an axial direction of the second arm, and wherein both the first arm and the second arm are downstream of the third arm along the outlet direction of the aerosolised liquid. 2 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the aerosol generator comprises a piezoceramic. 3 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the aerosol generator has a cross section which corresponds in shape and size to a cross section of the cavity. 4 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the coupling part includes a total cavity volume, wherein a portion of the total cavity volume is a dead volume resulting from the integration of the aerosol generator, and wherein the dead volume is less than or equal to 1/10 of the total cavity volume. 5 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the dead volume is less than or equal to 1 ml. 6 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 1 , wherein both a first internal end of the first hollow cylindrical channel open to the air duct and a second internal end of the second hollow cylindrical channel open to the air duct include a circular cross section. 7 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 6 , wherein a flow path from the first arm to the second arm is unimpeded. 8 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first arm and the second arm have different diameters. 9 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first and second arms form a T-shaped piece with the third arm formed by the aerosol generator. 10 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 1 , wherein there is provided a medicament reservoir. 11 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the aerosol generator has an interface for connection to a control unit. 12 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the interface is a USB interface. 13 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the aerosol generator is positioned diametrically opposite the second opening. 14 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the aerosolised liquid contains a medicament. 15 . A coupling part with an integrated aerosol generator for use in a breathing circuit, comprising: a housing enclosing a cavity and comprising: a first arm forming a first hollow cylindrical channel defining a first opening configured for connection to a ventilator; and a second arm forming a second hollow cylindrical channel defining a second opening configured for connection to a patient line or an endotracheal tube, wherein the first and second arms form an angle between 90° and 120° and wherein the first hollow cylindrical channel coincides with the second hollow cylindrical channel; and the aerosol generator integrated into the housing and configured to deliver an aerosolized liquid, wherein an outlet direction of the aerosolized liquid coincides with the first hollow cylindrical channel and the second hollow cylindrical channel, and the axial direction of the second arm. 16 . The breathing circuit as claimed in claim 15 , wherein the first hollow cylindrical channel and the second hollow cylindrical channel coincide to form an unobstructed air duct. 17 . The breathing circuit as claimed in claim 16 , wherein the first arm and the second arm have different diameters. 18 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 15 , wherein the aerosolised liquid contains a medicament. 19 . The coupling part as claimed in claim 15 , wherein the aerosol generator comprises a piezoceramic. 20 . A coupling part for use in a breathing circuit, comprising: a housing enclosing a cavity; an aerosol generator integrated into the housing and configured to deliver an aerosolised liquid; a first arm integral to the housing, disposed downstream of the aerosol generator along an outlet direction of the aerosolised liquid, forming a first hollow cylindrical channel defining a first opening configured for direct or indirect connection to a ventilator; and a second arm integral to the housing, disposed downstream of the aerosol generator along the outlet direction of the aerosolised liquid, forming a second hollow cylindrical channel defining a second opening configured for direct or indirect connection to a patient line or an endotracheal tube, wherein the first hollow cylindrical channel coincides with the second hollow cylindrical channel such that a flow path from the first arm to the second arm is unimpeded.
