Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A humidification system can include a heater base, a humidification chamber, and a breathing circuit. A cartridge can be removably coupled to the heater base. The cartridge can include various sensors, probes, sensor wire connectors, heater wire connectors, and/or other features. The cartridge can include features configured to mate with corresponding features on the humidification chamber and the heater base. The cartridge includes a memory, such as an EEPROM, or other suitable storage device. When the cartridge is installed on the heater base, the memory is electrically connected to a processor and/or memory of the heater base. Various models of cartridges can be produced for use with different humidification chambers, breathing circuits, and/or therapies. A connector can be configured to couple an inspiratory conduit to an outlet port of the humidification chamber. The connector can provide a pneumatic connection to the outlet port and an electrical connection to the cartridge.

What is claimed is: 1 . A humidification system comprising: a base unit, a gases supply and a humidification chamber, the gases supply being combined with the base unit, the humidification chamber being adapted to be removably located within the base unit, the humidification chamber providing or effecting an electrical connection between a circuit connector and the base unit; and the humidification chamber comprising: an outer wall, an upper wall connected to the outer wall, the outer wall and the upper wall at least partially defining a volume for containing a liquid, an inlet being configured to receive gases into the humidification chamber from the gases supply, an outlet being configured to connect to the circuit connector, the circuit connector being configured to direct heated and/or humidified gases from the humidification chamber to a patient or other person, the outlet being configured to provide a releasable and lockable connection to the circuit connector, and the outlet comprising a first electrical terminal and a second electrical terminal, the first electrical terminal being oriented generally horizontally, the first electrical terminal being configured to be received in a receptacle associated with the base unit when the humidification chamber is installed on the base unit, and the second electrical terminal is oriented generally vertically, the second electrical terminal being configured to be received in a breathing circuit receptacle on a breathing circuit when the breathing circuit is physically connected to the humidification chamber. 2 . The humidification system of claim 1 , wherein the outlet comprises a first portion and a second portion, the first portion extending substantially vertically from the humidification chamber, the second portion extending substantially horizontally from the first portion, the second portion being downstream of the first portion, in use. 3 . The humidification system of claim 1 , further comprising a recess or a projection configured to be engaged by a latch of the circuit connector, engagement between the latch and the recess or the projection providing the releasable and lockable connection of the circuit connector to the outlet. 4 . The humidification system of claim 1 , wherein the humidification chamber comprises a second orientator to control orientation of the humidification chamber relative to the base unit. 5 . The humidification system of claim 1 , wherein a direction of engagement of the first electrical terminal is substantially parallel to a direction of engagement of the humidification chamber with the base unit and a direction of engagement of the second electrical terminal is substantially parallel to a downstream end of the outlet. 6 . The humidification system of claim 1 , wherein the humidification chamber is releasably and lockably engageable with the base unit. 7 . The humidification system of claim 1 , wherein the outlet is connectable to the circuit connector before or after the humidification chamber is engaged with the base unit without impacting engagement of the humidification chamber with the base unit. 8 . The humidification system of claim 1 , wherein the humidification chamber is configured to provide a releasable and lockable connection to the base unit. 9 . The humidification system of claim 1 , where the first electrical terminal of the outlet comprises a blade connector. 10 . The humidification system of claim 9 , wherein the second electrical terminal comprises a plug, the plug configured to receive an electrical connector from a breathing circuit connected to the circuit connector. 11 . The humidification system of claim 10 , wherein the first electrical terminal extends along an axis generally parallel to an axis along which the humidification chamber is inserted into the base unit. 12 . The humidification system of claim 11 , wherein, in use, the breathing circuit is pneumatically coupled to the outlet of the humidification chamber and electrically coupled to the blade connector of the first electrical terminal when the humidification chamber with the breathing circuit is coupled to the base unit. 13 . The humidification system of claim 1 , wherein the outlet of the humidification chamber comprises an orientator, the orientator being configured to control an orientation of the circuit connector relative to the outlet including orienting the circuit connector relative to the outlet during coupling of the circuit connector to the outlet and orienting, at least in part, the first electrical terminal associated with the circuit connector relative to the second electrical terminal associated with the base unit. 14 . The humidification system of claim 13 , wherein the orientator comprises a first projection or a first recess configured to slidably engage a second recess or a second projection, respectively, of the circuit connector such that the circuit connector only slides onto the outlet in a predetermined orientation.
