Official abstract text for this publication.
A surgical training device is provided. The training device includes a model for practicing the passage of needle and suture. The model includes a base with a plurality of openings configured to receive a plurality of suture tabs. The suture tabs are made of elastomeric material. Some suture tabs includes pre-formed tab apertures for the passage of a suture. Other suture tabs include a penetrable area through which a suture needle may penetrate for passing a suture. The suture tabs are movable with respect to the base to orientate them at different angles with respect to the base. The base itself may include portions that are angled with respect to each other. The suture tabs are movable with respect to the base to pull, expose or open the tab apertures and surfaces. Some of the tab apertures are slits that open upon being pulled relative to the base requiring the user to practice holding the tab while passing the needle through the tab.

We claim: 1 . A suture training model, comprising: a base that holds a plurality of suture tabs that can be replaced, stretched, and rotated with respect to the base; each suture tab providing a tab face that is capable of being pierced or including at least one pre-formed aperture through which a suture is to be passed; the base includes a plurality of openings for receiving the plurality of suture tabs; each opening receiving one or more of the plurality of suture tabs; wherein the base includes at least one angle to form at least two planes with openings holding the plurality of suture tabs. 2 . The suture training model of claim 1 wherein the plurality of openings in the base are sized and configured to receive two suture tabs in one opening; the two suture tabs being removably located side-by-side inside the one opening. 3 . The suture training model of claim 1 wherein two half suture tabs are placed side-by-side inside an opening in the base and the two half suture tabs have the same or differently shaped suture tab faces. 4 . The suture training model of claim 1 wherein each of the pluralities of suture tabs and openings in which it is disposed are configured to permit more than one fixed orientation of the suture tab about its longitudinal axis with respect to the base. 5 . The suture training model of claim 1 wherein the at least two planes are hinged with respect to each other so that the angle between the at least two planes can be changed; each of the at least two planes having a top surface parallel to a bottom surface defining a substantially planar structure. 6 . The suture training model of claim 5 wherein each of the at least two planes defines a movable surface at various angles to increase skill level difficulty or to simulate an anatomical landscape. 7 . The suture training model of claim 1 wherein the at least two planes are molded integrally with respect to each other; each of the at least two planes having a top surface parallel to a bottom surface defining a substantially planar structure. 8 . The suture training model of claim 1 wherein the plurality of suture tabs are made of elastic material such that each suture tab is movable between a resting configuration and an elongated configuration. 9 . The suture training model of claim 7 wherein the at least two planes are integrally interconnected at a predetermined angle, allowing for various orientations of the suture training model with respect to a tabletop or a base of a surgical training device. 10 . The suture training model of claim 8 wherein the plurality of suture tabs are retained in the base and stretched in length when in the elongated configuration. 11 . The suture training model of claim 10 wherein the plurality of suture tabs tend to return to the resting configuration when released from the elongated configuration. 12 . The suture training model of claim 8 wherein the elastic material comprises silicone, elastomer, rubber or polymer. 13 . The suture training model of claim 1 further comprising a stand configured to hold the base, wherein the base is removably interconnectable to the stand via mating features. 14 . The suture training model of claim 13 wherein the mating features are configured to interconnect together the base and the stand at one or more orientation of the base with respect to the stand. 15 . The suture training model of claim 13 wherein the mating features comprise a plurality of pegs formed on a periphery of the base that are sized and configured to be inserted into a plurality of holes formed in the stand. 16 . The suture training model of claim 13 further including a holder that is configured to snap into the stand and to hold the base; the holder comprising at least one upstanding mouth defining a gap so that notches formed in the base can mate and be received into the gap to hold the base in a horizontal or a vertical direction. 17 . The suture training model of claim 13 wherein the mating features comprise at least one upstanding clip having two finger-like projections; the two finger-like projections being spaced apart from and facing each other to create a gap for receiving a portion of the base within the gap. 18 . The suture training model of claim 17 wherein one or more reinforcing ribs are located on the outside or inside surfaces of the two finger-like projections; the reinforcing ribs being configured to increase the rigidity of the two finger-like projections and to prevent over-flexion of the base when manipulated. 19 . The suture training model of claim 13 wherein the mating features comprise a plurality of mating surfaces provided along edges of the base, angled edge of the base, or as extensions from the top or the bottom surface of the base for snapping into clips of the stand in a variety of directions, orientations and angulations. 20 . The suture training model of claim 19 further comprising a ratchet for fixing the angle between the at least two planes; the ratchet being provided on one or more sides of the base and located between the at least two planes and the mating surfaces, wherein the mating surfaces are elongate flat tabs connectable to the clips of the stand.
