Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A shell assembly configured for holding one or more weighted articles includes an outer shell defining a cavity configured for receiving the article(s) therein, with a top, a bottom, and a shell opening providing access to the cavity. An extendible handle includes a grip, and a tether connected to the outer shell and the grip and extending between the outer shell and the grip, where the tether has flexible and rigid portions each forming a portion of the length of the tether. A storage compartment defined by an elongated sheath is positioned on the top of the outer shell and has an opening accessible from the exterior of the outer shell to receive the handle. The handle is moveable between a retracted position, where the handle is retracted into the storage compartment, and an extended position, where the handle extends outside the compartment and away from the outer shell.

What is claimed is: 1 . A shell assembly configured for holding one or more weighted articles, the shell assembly comprising: an outer shell defining a cavity configured for receiving the one or more weighted articles therein, the outer shell having a top, a bottom, and a shell opening providing access to the cavity for insertion or removal of the one or more weighted articles; an extendible handle comprising a grip configured for grasping by a user and a tether connected to the outer shell and the grip and extending over a length between the outer shell and the grip, wherein the tether has a flexible portion and a rigid portion each forming a portion of the length of the tether, wherein the rigid portion has a greater stiffness than the flexible portion; and a storage compartment defined by an elongated sheath positioned on the top of the outer shell, wherein the storage compartment has an opening accessible from an exterior of the outer shell and is configured to receive the extendible handle, wherein the extendible handle is moveable between a retracted position, where the extendible handle is retracted into the storage compartment, and an extended position, where the extendible handle extends outside the storage compartment and away from the outer shell. 2 . The shell assembly of claim 1 , wherein, when the extendible handle is in the retracted position, a majority of a length of the tether is received within the storage compartment. 3 . The shell assembly of claim 1 , wherein the tether has a fixed end connected to the outer shell at a connection point located within an opening of the storage compartment. 4 . The shell assembly of claim 1 , wherein the tether is formed of a flexible fabric material, and the rigid portion has a rigid reinforcing member engaged with the flexible fabric material to provide the greater stiffness. 5 . The shell assembly of claim 1 , the tether has a fixed end connected to the outer shell at a connection point, and wherein the flexible portion of the tether extends from the connection point to the rigid portion, and the rigid portion extends from the flexible portion to the grip. 6 . A shell assembly configured for holding one or more weighted articles, the shell assembly comprising: an outer shell defining a cavity configured for receiving the one or more weighted articles therein, the outer shell having a top, a bottom, and a shell opening providing access to the cavity for insertion or removal of the one or more weighted articles; an extendible handle comprising a grip configured for grasping by a user and a tether connected to the outer shell and the grip and extending between the outer shell and the grip; and a storage compartment defined by an elongated sheath positioned on the top of the outer shell, wherein the storage compartment has an opening accessible from an exterior of the outer shell and is configured to receive the extendible handle, wherein the extendible handle is moveable between a retracted position, where the extendible handle is retracted into the storage compartment, and an extended position, where the extendible handle extends outside the storage compartment and away from the outer shell, and wherein the outer shell has an elongated cylindrical shape that is elongated between a first end and a second end, and wherein the storage compartment has an opening located proximate to the first end of the outer shell, and the storage compartment extends in a direction from the first end toward the second end. 7 . A shell assembly configured for holding one or more weighted articles, the shell assembly comprising: an outer shell defining a cavity configured for receiving the one or more weighted articles therein, the outer shell having a top, a bottom, and a shell opening providing access to the cavity for insertion or removal of the one or more weighted articles; an extendible handle comprising a grip configured for grasping by a user and a tether connected to the outer shell and the grip and extending between the outer shell and the grip; and a storage compartment defined by an elongated sheath positioned on the top of the outer shell, wherein the storage compartment has an opening accessible from an exterior of the outer shell and is configured to receive the extendible handle, wherein the extendible handle is moveable between a retracted position, where the extendible handle is retracted into the storage compartment, and an extended position, where the extendible handle extends outside the storage compartment and away from the outer shell, and wherein the sheath is formed by a fabric piece connected to an outer surface of the outer shell to define the storage compartment between the fabric piece and the outer surface. 8 . A shell assembly configured for holding one or more weighted articles, the shell assembly comprising: an outer shell defining a cavity configured for receiving the one or more weighted articles therein, the outer shell having a top, a bottom, and a shell opening providing access to the cavity for insertion or removal of the one or more weighted articles; an extendible handle comprising a grip configured for grasping by a user and a tether connected to the outer shell and the grip and extending between the outer shell and the grip; and a storage compartment defined by an elongated sheath positioned on the top of the outer shell, wherein the storage compartment has an opening accessible from an exterior of the outer shell and is configured to receive the extendible handle, wherein the extendible handle is moveable between a retracted position, where the extendible handle is retracted into the storage compartment, and an extended position, where the extendible handle extends outside the storage compartment and away from the outer shell, and wherein the storage compartment has a flared portion at the opening, the flared portion receiving the grip when the extendible handle is in the retracted position. 9 . A shell assembly configured for holding one or more weighted articles, the shell assembly comprising: an outer shell formed by one or more fabric panels defining a cavity configured for receiving the one or more weighted articles therein, the outer shell having a top, a bottom, and a shell opening providing access to the cavity for insertion or removal of the one or more weighted articles; and an extendible handle comprising a grip configured for grasping by a user and a tether connected to the outer shell and the grip and extending between the outer shell and the grip, wherein the tether is formed of a flexible fabric material and comprises: a fixed end connected to the outer shell; a flexible portion extending from the fixed end to a distal end spaced from the fixed end along a length of the tether; and a rigid portion extending from the distal end of the flexible portion to the grip, such that the grip is spaced from the distal end of the flexible portion along the length of the tether, wherein the rigid portion comprises a rigid reinforcing member engaged with the flexible fabric material to provide the rigid portion with greater stiffness than the flexible portion. 10 . The shell assembly of claim 9 , further comprising a storage compartment defined by an elongated sheath connected to the outer shell, wherein the storage compartment has an opening accessible from an exterior of the outer shell and is configured to receive the extendible handle, wherein the extendible handle is moveable between a retracted position, where the extendible handle is retracted into the sheath of the storage compartment, and an extended position, where the extendible handle extends outside the storage compartment and away from th
