Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A power tool adapted to impart axial impacts to a tool bit includes a housing having a motor housing portion and a handle portion extending transversely from the motor housing portion, an electric motor supported in the motor housing portion and defining a motor axis, a non-rotatable barrel extending from the motor housing portion and defining a barrel axis parallel to the motor axis, a reciprocation drive assembly coupled to the electric motor and configured to convert torque from the electric motor to reciprocating motion of a piston received within the barrel for reciprocation therein along the barrel axis, a striker received within the barrel for reciprocation in response to the reciprocation of the piston, and an anvil at least partially received within the barrel and positioned between the striker and tool bit. The anvil communicates axial impacts to the tool bit in response to reciprocation of the striker.

What is claimed is: 1 . A power tool adapted to impart axial impacts to a tool bit, the power tool comprising: a housing including a motor housing portion and a handle portion extending transversely from the motor housing portion; an electric motor supported in the motor housing portion and defining a motor axis; a non-rotatable barrel directly coupled to the motor housing portion and extending forwardly of the motor housing portion and defining a barrel axis oriented parallel to the motor axis; a reciprocation drive assembly coupled to the electric motor and configured to convert torque from the electric motor to reciprocating motion of a piston that is at least partially received within the barrel for reciprocation therein along the barrel axis; a striker received within the barrel for reciprocation in response to reciprocation of the piston; and an anvil at least partially received within the barrel and positioned between the striker and the tool bit, the anvil configured to communicate axial impacts to the tool bit in response to reciprocation of the striker. 2 . The power tool of claim 1 , wherein the anvil includes an open end and a closed end, and wherein the anvil defines an inner bore at the open end configured to at least partially receive a shank of the tool bit. 3 . The power tool of claim 2 , wherein the anvil includes a length measured between the open end and the closed end, and wherein the inner bore extends a majority of the length. 4 . The power tool of claim 1 , further comprising a retainer within the barrel and defining a central bore extending therethrough along the barrel axis, wherein the retainer is configured to selectively secure the striker in an idle position in which the striker is inhibited from reciprocating within the barrel. 5 . The power tool of claim 4 , wherein the barrel includes: a step defining an interior annular surface, and an elastic member positioned between the retainer and the annular surface of the barrel to absorb an impact from the striker prior to reaching the idle position. 6 . The power tool of claim 1 , further comprising a tool holder on an end of the barrel opposite the motor housing portion and configured to support the tool bit. 7 . The power tool of claim 6 , wherein the tool holder includes a case that partially encloses the barrel at a forward end thereof, and wherein the case includes a tubular wall that defines a receptacle for receiving the tool bit. 8 . The power tool of claim 7 , wherein the tool holder further includes a quick-connect mechanism having a sleeve slidably positioned about the tubular wall and movable between a release position at which the tool bit is removable from the tool holder, and a locking position at which the tool bit cannot be removed from the tool holder. 9 . The power tool of claim 7 , wherein the case includes a circumferentially-extending, inwardly protruding first rib, and wherein the anvil includes a circumferentially-extending, outwardly protruding second rib that abuts the first rib of the case to define a forward movable extent of the anvil. 10 . A power tool adapted to impart axial impacts to a tool bit, the power tool comprising: a housing including a motor housing portion and a handle portion extending transversely from the motor housing portion; an electric motor supported in the motor housing portion and defining a motor axis; a non-rotatable barrel directly coupled to the motor housing portion and extending forwardly of the motor housing portion and defining a barrel axis oriented parallel to the motor axis; a tool holder on an end of the barrel opposite the motor housing portion and configured to support the tool bit, the tool holder including a quick-connect mechanism having a sleeve movable between a release position where the tool bit is removable from the tool holder, and a locking position where the tool bit cannot be removed from the tool holder; a reciprocation drive assembly coupled to the electric motor and configured to convert torque from the electric motor to reciprocating motion of a piston that is at least partially received within the barrel for reciprocation therein along the barrel axis; a striker received within the barrel for reciprocation in response to reciprocation of the piston; and an anvil at least partially received within the barrel and positioned between the striker and the tool bit, the anvil configured to communicate axial impacts to the tool bit in response to reciprocation of the striker; wherein the anvil further includes an open end and a closed end, and wherein the anvil defines an inner bore at the open end configured to at least partially receive a shank of the tool bit. 11 . The power tool of claim 10 , wherein the tool holder includes a case that partially encloses the barrel at a forward end thereof, wherein the case includes a tubular wall that defines a receptacle for receiving the tool bit, and wherein the sleeve is slidable along the tubular wall. 12 . The power tool of claim 11 , wherein the tool holder further includes a biasing member that biases the sleeve toward the locking position. 13 . The power tool of claim 10 , wherein the anvil includes a length measured between the open end and the closed end, and wherein the inner bore extends a majority of the length. 14 . The power tool of claim 10 , further comprising a retainer within the barrel and defining a central bore extending therethrough along the barrel axis, wherein the retainer is configured to selectively secure the striker in an idle position in which the striker is inhibited from reciprocating within the barrel. 15 . The power tool of claim 14 , wherein the barrel includes: a step defining an interior annular surface, and an elastic member positioned between the retainer and the annular surface of the barrel to absorb an impact from the striker prior to reaching the idle position. 16 . The power tool of claim 10 , wherein the tool holder includes a case that partially encloses the barrel at a forward end thereof. 17 . The power tool of claim 16 , wherein the case includes a circumferentially-extending, inwardly protruding first rib, and wherein the anvil includes a circumferentially-extending, outwardly protruding second rib that abuts the first rib of the case to define a forward movable extent of the anvil. 18 . A power tool adapted to impart axial impacts to a tool bit, the power tool comprising: a housing including a motor housing portion and a handle portion extending transversely from the motor housing portion; an electric motor supported in the motor housing portion and defining a motor axis; a non-rotatable barrel directly coupled to the motor housing portion and extending forwardly of the motor housing portion and defining a barrel axis oriented parallel to the motor axis; a tool holder supported on an end of the barrel opposite the motor housing portion and configured to support the tool bit, the tool holder including a case that partially encloses the barrel at a forward end thereof, wherein the case includes a circumferentially- extending inwardly protruding first rib; a reciprocation drive assembly coupled to the electric motor and configured to convert torque from the electric motor to reciprocating motion of a piston that is at least partially received within the barrel for reciprocation therein along the barrel axis; a striker received within the barrel for reciprocation in response to reciprocation of the piston; and an anvil at least partially received within the barre
