Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Exclusion devices for anatomical structures, and related instruments and related methods, are disclosed. An exclusion device for an anatomical structure may include a first beam, a second beam, and/or a first spring operatively coupled to the first beam and the second beam to exert a closing force on the first beam and the second beam. The first spring may be generally U-shaped and/or may include a first end portion and a second end portion generally opposite a connecting portion.

What is claimed is: 1 . An exclusion device for an anatomical structure, the exclusion device comprising: a first beam including a first forked end; a second beam; and a first spring operatively coupled to the first beam and the second beam to exert a closing force on the first beam and the second beam; wherein the first spring is generally U-shaped and comprises a first end portion and a second end portion generally opposite a connecting portion; wherein the first beam is repositionable with respect to the second beam between an open position and a closed position; wherein at least a portion of the first spring interposes the first forked end when in the closed position; and, wherein at least the portion of the first spring discontinues interposing the first forked end when in the open position. 2 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first spring comprises a first reverse bend portion between the connecting portion and the first end portion; and wherein the first spring comprises a second reverse bend portion between the connection portion and the second end portion. 3 . The exclusion device of claim 2 , wherein the first beam, the second beam, and the first spring are configured so that a closed bias pre-load is provided by the first reverse bend portion and the second reverse bend portion. 4 . The exclusion device of claim 2 , wherein, between the connecting portion and the first reverse bend portion and the second reverse bend portion, the first spring is generally converging; and wherein between the first reverse bend portion and the first end portion, and between the second reverse bend portion and the second end portion, the first spring is generally diverging. 5 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first spring is substantially coplanar. 6 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein the closing force varies with a temperature of the first spring. 7 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first spring is constructed from at least one of Nitinol, stainless steel, or a polymer. 8 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first end portion of the first spring is operatively coupled to the first beam by a first pivot; wherein the first pivot is rotatable relative to the first beam; wherein the second end portion of the first spring is operatively coupled to the second beam by a second pivot; and wherein the second pivot is rotatable relative to the second beam. 9 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first spring is rigidly coupled to at least one of the first beam and the second beam. 10 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first spring is configured to exert the closing force by both bending and torsional loads. 11 . The exclusion device of claim 1 , wherein the first spring is configured to exert the closing force by both bending and torsional loads. 12 . An exclusion device for an anatomical structure, the exclusion device comprising: a first beam including a first end opposing a second end, the first beam having a dominant lateral dimension; a second beam including a first end opposing a second end, the second beam having a dominant lateral dimension; and a first spring operatively coupled to the first beam and the second beam at a position laterally inset from the first end of the first beam and from the first end of the second beam, the first spring biasing the first beam toward the second beam; and, a second spring operatively coupled to the first beam and the second beam at a position laterally inset from the second end of the first beam and from the second end of the second beam, the second spring biasing the first beam toward the second beam; wherein in a clamped position of the exclusion device, the first beam and the second beam substantially overlap one another and the first spring and the second spring extend beyond the first and second beams in the dominant lateral dimension; wherein in an unclamped position of the exclusion device, the first beam and the second beam substantially overlap one another and the first and second ends of the first and second beams extend beyond the first and second springs in the dominant lateral dimension. 13 . The exclusion device of claim 12 , wherein: the first spring is generally U-shaped; the second spring is generally U-shaped. 14 . The exclusion device of claim 12 , wherein: the first beam includes a first funneled cavity configured to receive a first portion of the first spring; the second beam includes a second funneled cavity configured to receive a second portion of the first spring; at least one of the first funneled cavity and the second funneled cavity is delineated by a laterally rounded surface. 15 . The exclusion device of claim 14 , wherein: a first portion of the first beam delineating the first funneled cavity is thinned relative to surrounding portions of the first beam to facilitate a compression fit between the first beam and the first spring; a second portion of the second beam delineating the second funneled cavity is thinned relative to surrounding portions of the second beam to facilitate a compression fit between the second beam and the first spring. 16 . The exclusion device of claim 15 , wherein: the thinning of the first beam is the result of a spherical cap depression formed into the first beam; the thinning of the second beam is the result of a spherical cap depression formed into the second beam. 17 . The exclusion device of claim 12 , wherein: the first beam includes a first planar surface configured to face a first planar surface of the first spring; the second beam includes a second planar surface configured to face a second planar surface of the first spring; wherein the planar surfaces of the first and second beams cooperate with the planar surfaces of the first spring to maintain the first and second beams substantially overlapping one another. 18 . The exclusion device of claim 12 , wherein: wherein in the clamped position of the exclusion device, the first beam and the second beam completely overlap one another; wherein in the unclamped position of the exclusion device, the first beam and the second beam completely overlap one another. 19 . The exclusion device of claim 12 , wherein: the first end of the first beam comprises a first fork; the first end of the second beam comprises a first fork; portions of the first spring extend through the first forks of the first and second beams. 20 . The exclusion device of claim 19 , wherein: the second end of the first beam comprises a second fork; the second end of the second beam comprises a second fork; portions of the second spring extend through the second forks of the first and second beams. 21 . The exclusion device of claim 12 , further comprising: a third spring operatively coupled to the first beam and the second beam at a position laterally inset from the first end of the first beam and from the first end of the second beam, the third spring biasing the first beam toward the second beam; a fourth spring operatively coupled to the first beam and the second beam at a position laterally inset from the second end of the first beam and from the second end of the second beam, the fourth spring biasing the first beam toward the second beam.
