Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Various components for artificial candles and other lighting devices are described that can be used to create a realistic flame effect in the devices. The devices include a flame element that extends upwardly from a housing. A light source can be disposed with respect to the flame element such that the flame element is illuminated. A variety of drive mechanisms could be disposed within the body of the device that can cause movement of the flame element with respect to the housing. The flame element can be coupled to a housing or mounting bracket of the device using various components to suspend the flame element within the housing.

What is claimed is: 1 . An electronic lighting device, comprising: an outer shell having an elongated shape; a flame element positioned within the outer shell, the flame element comprising at least a flame-shaped portion that is shaped to resemble a flame extending outside of the outer shell, wherein the flame-shaped portion is movable with respect to the outer shell, wherein the flame element comprises a body portion that has an aperture, wherein the aperture allows an arm to extend inside of a hollow interior of the flame element to enable movement of the flame-shaped portion, and wherein the flame-shaped portion comprises multiple different transparency amounts such that an upper portion of the flame-shaped portion is more transparent than a lower portion of the flame-shaped portion; and at least one light source configured to emit one or more colors of light onto the flame-shaped portion to simulate a color and movement of a candle flame, wherein a portion of the flame element comprises a tab that forms part of the aperture, wherein the tab and a downward projection of the arm overlap to allow the flame element to be secured on the arm. 2 . The electronic lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one light source comprises a light-emitting diode (LED). 3 . The electronic lighting device of claim 1 , wherein a color of the at least one light source comprises at least one of orange, yellow, red, blue, or a combination thereof. 4 . The electronic lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the outer shell comprises a scented or unscented wax coating. 5 . The electronic lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the outer shell comprises an uneven top ridge to mimic an appearance of a real candle. 6 . The electronic lighting device of claim 1 , comprising: a plastic layer adjacent to the outer shell configured to prevent light from the light source to be seen through the outer shell. 7 . The electronic lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the outer shell comprises an elongated cylindrical section and a bottom section having a smaller diameter than the elongated cylindrical section. 8 . The electronic lighting device of claim 7 , wherein the bottom section comprises one or more grooves. 9 . The electronic lighting device of claim 1 , wherein the tab is defined by a sidewall of flame element. 10 . The electronic lighting device of claim 1 , comprising: a drive mechanism positioned below the flame element configured to drive a movement of the flame element to simulate a moving flame.
