Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Inventive techniques for forming unique compositions of matter are disclosed, as well as associated physical characteristics and properties of the materials. In particular, particles comprising a metal lattice are characterized by having carbon (preferably graphene) disposed within the crystalline lattice structure thereof. The carbon is at least partially disposed in interstitial sites of the metal lattice, and may be present in amounts ranging from about 15 wt % to about 90 wt % of the total particle mass, with about 15 wt % to about 60 wt % being disposed in the interstitial sites, e.g., between basal planes, of the metal lattice. The carbon, moreover, is substantially homogeneously dispersed throughout the resultant material, conveying unique and advantageous properties such as strength-to-weight ratio, density, mechanical toughness, sheer strength, flex strength, hardness, anti-corrosiveness, electrical and/or thermal conductivity, etc. as described herein. In some approaches, the graphene is pristine, and has corresponding physical characteristics as described herein.

What is claimed is: 1 . A composition of matter, comprising one or more particles, wherein the one or more particles independently comprise a metal lattice having carbon disposed in interstitial sites of the metal lattice. 2 . The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein at least some of the carbon is characterized by having a structure comprising one or more coherent, planar layers. 3 . The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein at least some of the carbon is interlaced interstitially between basal planes of the metal lattice. 4 . The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein the carbon is substantially devoid of crystallographic defects. 5 . The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein the one or more particles are characterized by a lack of carbon aggregate(s) and/or carbon agglomerate(s) at grain boundaries thereof. 6 . The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein the carbon is present in the metal lattice in an amount ranging from about 6 wt % to about 90 wt % of the one or more particles. 7 . The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein the carbon disposed in the interstitial sites of the metal lattice is present in an amount ranging from about 15 wt % to about 60 wt % of the one or more particles. 8 . The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein at least some of the carbon is pristine. 9 . The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein the metal lattice is characterized by a crystalline structure selected from the group consisting of face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC), and hexagonal close-packed (HCP). 10 . The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein at least some of the carbon is covalently bonded to metal atoms of the metal lattice. 11 . The composition of matter as recited in claim 7 , wherein covalent bonds between atoms of the carbon comprise non-polar covalent bonds. 12 . The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein the carbon is substantially homogeneously distributed throughout the metal lattice. 13 . The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein a largest discernable feature size of the composition of matter is in a range from about 0.1 nm to about 1 μm. 14 . The composition of matter as recited in claim 1 , wherein the metal lattice substantially excludes ionic bonds.
