Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A bone anchoring device includes a receiving part with a recess for receiving a rod and a flexible head receiving portion for pivotably holding a head of a bone anchoring element, a pressure member configured to exert pressure on the head when the head is held in the head receiving portion, and a clamping ring positionable around the head receiving portion and movable from a first position where the head is pivotable relative to the receiving part, to a second position where the clamping ring exerts a radial force on the head receiving portion to lock the head relative to the receiving part. When the clamping ring is at the first position, the clamping ring abuts the receiving part to restrict upward movement, while a surface of the clamping ring that faces upwards is exposed for engaging an instrument to move the clamping ring to the second position.

What is claimed is: 1 . A bone anchoring device comprising: a bone anchoring element comprising a shank for anchoring to bone and a head; and a receiving part for coupling a rod to the bone anchoring element, the receiving part comprising: a receiving part body having a first end, a second end below the first end, a central axis extending between the first end and the second end, a recess at the first end for receiving the rod, and a head receiving portion for pivotably holding the head of the bone anchoring element, the head receiving portion defining an opening at the second end configured to facilitate insertion of the head therethrough while maintaining a constant size, wherein the head receiving portion is configured to extend to an axial position below a region of the head defining a greatest width of the head measured in a direction perpendicular to the central axis when the head is held in the head receiving portion; a pressure member configured to directly exert pressure on the head when the head is in the head receiving portion of the receiving part body; and a ring configured to be held around the head receiving portion at a position where the opening of the head receiving portion is maintained at the constant size; wherein when the head and the pressure member are in the receiving part body and the ring is around the head receiving portion, a compressible region of the receiving part is configured to engage the region of the head defining the greatest width of the head, and the ring is configured to facilitate compression of the compressible region to clamp the head relative to the receiving part. 2 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the compressible region is formed on the pressure member. 3 . The bone anchoring device of claim 2 , wherein the ring is configured to directly engage the head receiving portion and the head receiving portion is configured to directly engage the compressible region to facilitate compression of the compressible region to clamp the head. 4 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the compressible region is separable from the receiving part body. 5 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the receiving part body comprises a first engagement surface and the ring comprises a second engagement surface respectively configured to be engaged by an instrument to move the ring and the receiving part body relative to each other along the central axis. 6 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein when the ring is around the head receiving portion, the ring is movable axially while a rotational orientation of the ring relative to the receiving part body remains constant. 7 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the head is insertable through the opening into the head receiving portion when the ring is assembled to the head receiving portion. 8 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the head receiving portion defines at least one recess that extends from the second end of the receiving part body upwards towards the first end of the receiving part body and that extends entirely through the head receiving portion in a radial direction. 9 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein at least part of the pressure member is configured to extend axially closer to the first end of the receiving part body than the entire ring is to the first end of the receiving part body. 10 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the pressure member is configured to extend into the recess for the rod to directly engage the rod. 11 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein an uppermost end surface of the pressure member is configured to abut against the receiving part body to restrict upward movement of the pressure member relative to the receiving part body. 12 . The bone anchoring device of claim 1 , wherein the ring is adjustable to a locking position relative to the head receiving portion to lock an angular position of the head relative to the receiving part. 13 . A bone anchoring device comprising: a bone anchoring element comprising a shank for anchoring to bone and a head; and a receiving part for coupling a rod to the bone anchoring element, the receiving part comprising: a receiving part body having a first end, a second end below the first end, a central axis extending between the first end and the second end, a recess at the first end for receiving the rod, and a head receiving portion at the second end for pivotably holding the head of the bone anchoring element; a pressure member configured to extend into the recess for the rod to directly engage the rod and to directly exert pressure on the head when the head is in the head receiving portion of the receiving part body; and a ring positionable around an expandable region of the receiving part to restrict expansion of the expandable region; wherein when the head, the pressure member, and the ring are assembled to the receiving part body, at least part of each of the receiving part body, the ring, and the expandable region is positionable at an axial position below a region of the head defining a greatest width of the head measured in a direction perpendicular to the central axis in an arrangement such that the head is configured to be prevented from contacting the receiving part body, while the receiving part body, the ring, and the expandable region are pivotable together relative to the head. 14 . The bone anchoring device of claim 13 , wherein the expandable region is formed on the pressure member. 15 . The bone anchoring device of claim 13 , wherein when the ring is around the head receiving portion, the ring is movable axially while a rotational orientation of the ring relative to the receiving part body remains constant. 16 . The bone anchoring device of claim 13 , wherein the ring is positionable around the head receiving portion. 17 . The bone anchoring device of claim 16 , wherein the ring is configured to directly engage the head receiving portion and the head receiving portion is configured to directly engage the expandable region to restrict the expansion of the expandable region. 18 . The bone anchoring device of claim 13 , wherein the ring is adjustable to a locking position relative to the head receiving portion to lock an angular position of the head relative to the receiving part. 19 . A receiving part of a bone anchoring device configured to couple a rod to a bone anchoring element, the receiving part comprising: a receiving part body having a first end, a second end below the first end, a central axis extending between the first end and the second end, a recess at the first end for receiving the rod, and a head receiving portion at the second end for pivotably holding a head of the bone anchoring element; a pressure member configured to directly exert pressure on the head of the bone anchoring element when the head is in the head receiving portion of the receiving part body; and a ring engageable with an expandable region of the receiving part to restrict expansion of the expandable region; wherein when the pressure member and the ring are assembled to and restricted from being separated from the receiving part body, the pressure member is movable to and configured to be held at a first position where the head of the bone anchoring element is insertable into the head receiving portion, and is movable to and configured to be held at a second position where an inserted head is restricted from being removed from the head receiving portion.
