A miniature vein enhancer includes: a housing, one or more movable mirrors, photo detector, and apparatus for transmitting a beam of light that includes a first and second wavelengths in the infrared and the visible spectrum, respectively. The one or more movable mirrors scan the beam onto the target surface. The photo detector is responsive to the first wavelength of light, and thereby receives a contrasted image formed of reflected light at the first wavelength from the target surface. The photo detector outputs an analog signal representing the contrasted image, which is used by the apparatus for transmitting a beam of light to project the contrasted image in combination with the one or more movable mirrors, onto the target surface. A plurality of protruding bars positioned in proximity to an exit window of the housing thereby prevent a user from placing an eye proximate to the optical path.

We claim: 1 . A portable hand-held miniature vein enhancer for imaging subcutaneous blood vessels of a target surface, said vein enhancer comprising: means for transmitting a beam of light comprising: a first wavelength in the infrared spectrum, and a second wavelength in the visible spectrum; one or more movable mirrors configured to selectively move to scan said beam of light onto the target surface; one or more photo detectors being responsive to said first wavelength of light, said one or more photo detectors configured to receive said first wavelength of light after being reflected from the target surface, said reflected light comprising a contrasted image being formed by said reflected light from the target surface being amplitude modulated according to differential amounts of absorption and reflection between one or more subcutaneous blood vessels and surrounding tissue therein; said one or more photo detectors being further configured to output an analog signal representing said contrasted image; wherein said means for transmitting a beam of light is configured to receive said analog signal from said one or more photo detectors, and to project said contrasted image in combination with said one or more movable mirrors, onto the target surface to overlay the imaged blood vessels over the subcutaneous blood vessels beneath the target surface; a housing for the portable hand-held miniature vein enhancer, said housing configured to house said means for transmitting a beam of light, said one or more movable mirrors, and said one or more photo detectors; said housing comprising an exit window; wherein said one or more movable mirrors are configured to direct said beam of light along an optical path out through said exit window; and a plurality of protruding bars positioned in proximity to said exit window of said housing, without blocking said optical path, to thereby prevent a user from placing an eye proximate to said optical path. 2 . The portable hand-held miniature vein enhancer according to claim 1 wherein said hand-holdable housing is configured to permit single-handed lifting and use of said miniature vein enhancer. 3 . The portable hand-held miniature vein enhancer according to claim 2 wherein said miniature vein enhancer is battery powered. 4 . The portable hand-held miniature vein enhancer according to claim 3 wherein said first wavelength of light is in the range of 638 nm to 1400 nm. 5 . The portable hand-held miniature vein enhancer according to claim 4 wherein said second wavelength of light is in the range of 380 nm to 750 nm. 6 . The portable hand-held miniature vein enhancer according to claim 5 wherein said second wavelength of light comprises a red color. 7 . The portable hand-held miniature vein enhancer according to claim 6 wherein said red color comprises a wavelength of 638 nm. 8 . The portable hand-held miniature vein enhancer according to claim 5 wherein said second wavelength of light comprises an orange color. 9 . The portable hand-held miniature vein enhancer according to claim 5 wherein said second wavelength of light comprises a yellow color. 10 . The portable hand-held miniature vein enhancer according to claim 5 wherein said second wavelength of light comprises a green color. 11 . The portable hand-held miniature vein enhancer according to claim 5 wherein said second wavelength of light comprises a blue color. 12 . The portable hand-held miniature vein enhancer according to claim 5 wherein said second wavelength of light comprises a violet color.
