An apparatus for generating aerosol from an aerosolizable medium, the apparatus including a housing; and a chamber for receiving an article. The article includes an aerosolizable medium; and a marker arrangement including a first marker and a second marker. The apparatus includes a sensor arrangement configured to operate in a first mode and a second mode. In the first mode the sensor arrangement monitors non-continuously for the presence of the first marker. In the second mode the sensor arrangement is configured to read identification information from the second marker. The sensor arrangement operates in the second mode responsive to the detection of the presence of the first marker in the first mode.

The invention claimed is: 1 . An apparatus for generating aerosol from an aerosolizable medium, the apparatus comprising: a housing; a chamber for receiving an article, the article comprising: an aerosolizable medium which is a solid, gel or wax, and a marker arrangement comprising a first marker and a second marker; a heating arrangement; and a sensor arrangement configured to operate in a first mode and a second mode, wherein: in the first mode the sensor arrangement monitors non-continuously for a presence of the first marker, in the second mode the sensor arrangement is configured to read identification information from the second marker, and the sensor arrangement operates in the second mode responsive to detection of the presence of the first marker in the first mode; and wherein the apparatus is configured to begin heating the aerosolizable medium responsive to detecting the presence of the first marker in the first mode. 2 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein, in the first mode, the sensor arrangement is configured to monitor periodically for the presence of the first marker at regular or irregular intervals, with a duty ratio of less than 100%, optionally with a duty ratio of less than or equal to 10%. 3 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is configured to operate at a higher power when the sensor arrangement is in the second mode than when the sensor arrangement is in the first mode. 4 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the apparatus comprises one or more aerosol generating elements configured to be activated based on the identification information of the article. 5 . The apparatus according to claim 4 , wherein the one or more aerosol generating elements comprises a heater arrangement. 6 . The apparatus according to claim 5 , wherein the heater arrangement is configured to provide a first heating profile if the identification information has a first characteristic, and the heater arrangement is configured to provide a second heating profile if the identification information has a second characteristic different from the first characteristic. 7 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the sensor arrangement comprises an optical sensor. 8 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the sensor arrangement comprises a capacitive sensor. 9 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the sensor arrangement comprises: a first sensor for detecting the presence of the first marker; and a second sensor for reading identification information from the second marker. 10 . The apparatus according to claim 9 , wherein the first sensor and the second sensor are different types of sensors. 11 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , further configured to adjust the heating according to the identification information or parameter read from the second marker in the second mode. 12 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , comprising an opening through which the article is inserted into the chamber, and a lid for covering the opening when no article is in place. 13 . The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the sensor arrangement is configured to detect first and/or second markers printed onto an external surface of the article. 14 . An apparatus for generating aerosol from an aerosolisable medium, the apparatus comprising: a housing; a chamber for receiving an article, the article comprising: an aerosolizable medium which is a solid, gel or wax; and a marker arrangement comprising a marker; a heating arrangement; and a sensor arrangement configured to operate in a first mode and a second mode, wherein: in the first mode the sensor arrangement monitors non-continuously for a presence of the article; in the second mode the sensor arrangement is configured to read identification information from the marker; and the sensor arrangement operates in the second mode responsive to the detection of the presence of the article in the first mode; and wherein the apparatus is configured to begin heating the aerosolizable medium responsive to detecting the presence of the article in the first mode.
