Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

An automated analyzer that receives samples prepared for analysis in an automated pre-analytical module and a method of operation of such automated analyzer. The automated analyzer includes a shuttle transfer station that receives a shuttle carrier from the automated pre-analytical system. The shuttle transfer station has a clamping assembly for the shuttle. The clamping assembly has jaws that advance engagement members into contact with a bottom portion of sample containers disposed in the shuttle. The clamping assembly secures the sample containers in the shuttle when sample is aspirated from the sample containers. The automated analyzer also has a multichannel puncture tool that is adapted to be carried by a robotic gripper mechanism. The multichannel puncture tool has multiple puncture members that each defines a channel. Each channel is in communication with a different trough in the consumable. A pipette can pass through the channel in the puncture tool.

First claim

Opening claim text (preview).

The invention claimed is: 1 . A puncture tool assembly comprising: a puncture tool having a tool body and a plurality of cannulated puncture members extending from the tool body, each of the plurality of the cannulated puncture members defining an opening extending through the tool body and each cannulated puncture member being sized to allow a pipette tip to pass therethrough, each cannulated puncture member also defining an edge configured to penetrate a penetrable lid and wherein each of one or more troughs is covered by the penetrable lid prior to being penetrated by respective cannulated puncture members; and a puncture tool gripper having a horizontal member dimensioned to receive the puncture tool and a first plurality of arms moveably connected to the horizontal member, the first plurality of arms being moveable from a first position in which the first plurality of arms engage the puncture tool to a second position in which the first plurality of arms are disengaged from the puncture tool, and a second plurality of arms moveably connected to the horizontal member, the second plurality of arms being moveable from a first position in which the second plurality of arms engages a consumable to a second position in which the second plurality of arms are disengaged from the consumable. 2 . The puncture tool assembly of claim 1 , wherein the puncture tool includes a pair of linking members extending upwardly from the puncture tool body. 3 . The puncture tool assembly of claim 2 , wherein an engagement opening is defined on each of the linking members. 4 . The puncture tool assembly of claim 1 , wherein the puncture tool is held in a puncture tool nest when not held by the puncture tool gripper, wherein the puncture tool gripper removes the puncture tool from the puncture tool nest upon the puncture tool gripper engaging the puncture tool. 5 . The puncture tool assembly of claim 4 , wherein the puncture tool nest includes a platform within a cavity of the puncture tool nest. 6 . The puncture tool assembly of claim 5 , wherein the platform of the puncture tool nest includes raised side edges configured to engage with the puncture tool when the puncture tool is placed in the cavity of the puncture tool nest. 7 . The puncture tool assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the first plurality of arms of the puncture tool gripper has an engagement feature attached thereto. 8 . The puncture tool assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of arms of the puncture tool gripper moves laterally with respect to each other. 9 . The puncture tool assembly of claim 7 , wherein each of the first plurality of arms of the puncture tool gripper comprises a projection. 10 . The puncture tool assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second plurality of arms each comprises a gripper finger. 11 . The puncture tool assembly of claim 10 , wherein each gripper finger of the second plurality of arms further comprises a plurality of protrusions. 12 . The puncture tool assembly of claim 2 , wherein a distance between each linking member of the pair of linking members is less than a length of the horizontal member.
