Disclosed is the compound vitamin D 3 phosphate and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, pharmaceutical compositions comprising the compound and methods for preparing the compound. Also disclosed are methods of treating vitamin D deficiency using the compound. The compound is particularly suitable for transdermal delivery.

The invention claimed is: 1 . A compound of the formula (I): or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein the compound is more than 80% pure. 2 . The compound of claim 1 , wherein the compound is of the formula (IA): or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 3 . The compound according to claim 2 , wherein the compound is in the free acid form. 4 . The compound according to claim 2 , wherein the compound is in the form of a pharmaceutically acceptable salt. 5 . A compound of the formula (I): wherein the compound is in the form of a di-sodium salt the compound is more than 80% pure. 6 . A compound of formula (IA): wherein the compound is in the form of a di-sodium salt the compound is more than 80% pure.
