Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Systems and/or methods for assessing the sleep quality of a patient in a sleep session are provided. Data is collected from the patient and/or physician including, for example, sleep session data in the form of one or more physiological parameters of the patient indicative of the patient's sleep quality during the sleep session, a subjective evaluation of sleep quality, etc.; patient profile data; etc. A sleep quality index algorithm, which optionally may be an adaptive algorithm, is applied, taking into account some or all of the collected data. Sleep quality data may be presented to at least the patient, and it may be displayed in any suitable format (e.g., a format useful for the patient to be appraised on the progress of the treatment, a format useful for a sleep clinician to monitor progress and/or assess the effectiveness of differing treatment regimens, etc).

First claim

What is claimed is: 1 . A method of assessing sleep quality of a user in a sleep session, the method comprising: by way of a plurality of sensors, obtaining sleep session data comprising a plurality of physiological parameters of the user indicative of the user's sleep quality during a first sleep session, the plurality of physiological parameters including a heart rate parameter and a motion parameter; by way of a processor, calculating a first sleep quality index based on at least the heart rate parameter, the motion parameter, and a sleep duration value; after the first sleep session, receiving user data input by the user into a user interface; by way of the processor, adjusting the sleep duration value to a new sleep duration value based on the received user data; by way of a processor, calculating a new sleep quality index based on the new sleep duration value; communicating the new sleep quality index to at least the user for displaying the new sleep quality index on a display; and communicating feedback to the user by controlling display of information on the display to the user regarding improvements for future sleep sessions determined based on the new sleep quality index. 2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the user data input by the user into the user interface includes subjective feedback about the first sleep session. 3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the communicating further comprises transmitting the first sleep quality index wirelessly to another electronic system. 4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of physiological parameters includes a temperature parameter. 5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the received user data includes a first value corresponding to sleep duration and a second value corresponding to sleep fragmentation. 6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first sleep quality index is calculated based on a plurality of score indexes, each score index associated with one of the plurality of physiological parameters. 7 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising storing, by way of the processor, a ranked order of stored values corresponding to the plurality of physiological parameters, wherein each stored value including a corresponding score index. 8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein adjusting the sleep duration value to a new sleep duration value changes the corresponding score index corresponding to at least one stored value of the stored values. 9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said calculating includes performing a relative weighting of the plurality of physiological parameters. 10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein said relative weighting of the plurality of physiological parameters is dependent on user profile data. 11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein said user profile data includes at least one of: age, sex, weight, ethnicity, and sleep disorder data. 12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein said relative weighting of the plurality of physiological parameters is dependent on the received user data. 13 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising, comparing a subsequent sleep quality index calculated in a subsequent sleep session to the first sleep quality index; by way of the processor, extrapolating at least one user characteristic based on a change between the first sleep quality index and the subsequent sleep quality index; and outputting the at least one user characteristic on the display, wherein the at least one user characteristic is configured to provide data to the user regarding effects of sleep hygiene and/or lifestyle changes. 14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the at least one user characteristic includes average expected life span, expected work performance, and/or expected athletic performance. 15 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising making adjustments to therapy sessions based on the feedback provided to the user; wherein said information includes directions for modification to therapy settings for the therapy sessions. 16 . An apparatus for assessing sleep quality of a user, the apparatus comprising: a display; and a processor configured to: receive, from a plurality of sensors, sleep session data comprising a plurality of physiological parameters of the user indicative of the user's sleep quality during a first sleep session, the plurality of physiological parameters including a heart rate parameter and a motion parameter; calculate a first sleep quality index based on at least the heart rate parameter, the motion parameter, and a sleep duration value; after the first sleep session, receive user data input by the user into a user interface; adjust the sleep duration value to a new sleep duration value based on the received user data; calculate a new sleep quality index based on the new sleep duration value; communicate the new sleep quality index to at least the user for displaying the new sleep quality index on the display; and communicate feedback to the user by controlling display of information on the display to the user regarding improvements for future sleep sessions determined based on the new sleep quality index. 17 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the processor is further configured to store a ranked order of stored values corresponding to the plurality of physiological parameters, wherein each stored value includes a corresponding score index. 18 . The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein adjusting the sleep duration value to the new sleep duration value changes the corresponding score index corresponding to at least one stored value of the stored values. 19 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the plurality of physiological parameters includes a temperature parameter. 20 . The apparatus of claim 16 , wherein the processor is configured to prompt the user to input user data related to each physiological parameter of the plurality of physiological parameters, and wherein the processor is configured to adjust the sleep duration value related to each physiological parameter based on the respective user data. 21 . The apparatus of claim 16 , comprising a positive airway pressure device configured to supply breathable gas under pressure to the user for treatment of sleep disorder breathing, and wherein the processor is configured to adjust the supply breathable gas under pressure to the user based on the received user data. 22 . An apparatus for assessing sleep quality of a user, the apparatus comprising: a display; non-transitory memory; and a processor coupled to the memory and the display, wherein the processor is configured to: receive sleep session data captured by a plurality of sensors including at least one sensor configured to be coupled to the user's body during sleep, the sleep session data including data indicative of the user's heart rate, motion, and temperature during sleep; calculate a sleep quality index for a sleep session based on the sleep session data; after the sleep session, receive user evaluation data input by the user into a graphic interface displayed to the user on the display, the evaluation data relating to user's evaluation of the sleep session; adjust a parameter used to calculate the sleep quality index based on the user evaluation data; calculate a new sleep quality index based on the adjusted parameter; output, on the display, the new sleep quality index to the user; and output, on the display, feedback to the user including information regarding improvements for future sleep s
