Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Surface coverings, such as floor coverings, with an interlocking design are described. Methods of making the surface coverings are further described. A plank including a resilient composite sheet having four sides, an upper surface, a lower surface, and an overall thickness, and said composite sheet including at least one base layer, wherein said at least one base layer including at least one polymeric material and at least one filler, wherein opposite sides of the composite sheet include a first tongue on a first side and a first groove on the opposite second side, wherein the first tongue and first groove have complementary shape to each other to be interlockingly engageable with a corresponding groove or tongue on an adjacent floor plank.

What is claimed is: 1 . A surface covering plank comprising: a composite sheet having an overall thickness of 5 mm or less, and having a planar upper surface, four sides, and a lower surface, the composite sheet comprising at least one base layer, wherein the at least one base layer comprises at least a homogenous blend of a thermoplastic polymeric material and a filler in sheet form, wherein opposite sides of the composite sheet comprise a first tongue on a first side and a first groove on the opposite second side, wherein the first tongue and the first groove have complementary shapes to each other to be interlockingly engageable at a joint seam with a corresponding groove or tongue on an adjacent floor plank, and wherein an uppermost surface of the surface covering plank ends at a vertical line intersecting a lowermost edge of the first groove, wherein the first tongue extends outwardly from the surface covering plank beyond the vertical line intersecting the lowermost edge of the first groove, and wherein the first tongue has a tongue tip extending from the vertical line with a tongue tip cross-sectional area that is from 8 percent to 20 percent of an entire cross-sectional area of the first tongue. 2 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said at least one base layer comprises from about 50 wt % to about 90 wt % filler. 3 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the filler is one or more of limestone, clay, talc, silicates, and aluminates. 4 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 3 , wherein the filler is in the form of particles. 5 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said at least one base layer comprises a stabilizer. 6 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the molecular weight of the polymeric material is from 10,000 to 1,000,000, based on weight average molecular weight. 7 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising a print layer with a printed design. 8 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the print layer is a PVC film. 9 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 7 , further comprising at least one wear layer on top of the print layer. 10 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the printed design simulates the appearance of natural wood, stone, or brick. 11 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the upper surface comprises a textural or embossed surface. 12 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the embossed surface is registered with the print design. 13 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 5 , wherein the stabilizer is zinc-calcium and/or epoxidized soybean oils. 14 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the filler is an inorganic filler. 15 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 14 , wherein the thermoplastic polymeric material is a polyvinyl chloride. 16 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the tongue tip cross-sectional area is from 10 percent to 15 percent of the entire cross-sectional area of the first tongue. 17 . The surface covering plank as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the tongue tip cross-sectional area is from 10 percent to 18 percent of the entire cross-sectional area of the first tongue.
