Official abstract text for this publication.
An adjustable socket system includes first and second shell components and first and second longitudinal supports connected to a base. The socket system is movable between an open configuration to loosen the fit of the socket system, and a closed configuration to secure the fit of the socket system on residual limb received therein. A tightening system includes a tensioning unit having a handle defining a moment arm rotatable about a rotation axis, and a tensioning element operatively coupled to the handle via a movable connection point located and protected between the first shell component and the first support and to the shell components via a control point. Rotation of the handle displaces the movable connection point and the tensioning element relative to the control point to move the socket system to the closed configuration.

The invention claimed is: 1 . An adjustable socket system comprising: a base; at least two longitudinal supports including a first support and a second support, each of the first and second supports having a distal end secured to the base and extending along a longitudinal axis of the adjustable socket system; and at least two shell components operatively connected to the at least two supports extending longitudinally and collectively form a socket wall defining a receiving volume adapted to receive a residual limb, the at least two shell components extending from the base, the adjustable socket system movable between an open configuration in which at least one of the at least two shell components is moved radially outward relative to the longitudinal axis to loosen a fit of the adjustable socket system, and a closed configuration in which at least one of the at least two shell components is moved radially inward relative to the open configuration to secure the fit of the adjustable socket system on the residual limb; wherein the at least two shell components comprise a first shell component wrapping around a lateral aspect of the residual limb and having a distal part attached to the first support and a proximal part slidably connected to the distal part such that the distal and proximal parts are longitudinally displaceable with respect to one another to adjust a length of the first shell component between a first length and a second length different than the first length; wherein the first support is arranged to correspond to a medial aspect of the residual limb, and the second support is arranged to correspond to a lateral aspect of the residual limb, the first and second supports being located opposite to one another relative to and across from the longitudinal axis with the base extending between and upwardly toward the first and second supports; wherein each of the first and second supports has an elongate configuration with the second support extending farther from the base than the first support; further comprising a tightening system arranged to move the at least two shell components between the open and closed configurations, the tightening system including at least one tensioning element operatively connected to a tensioning unit and slidably routed through a plurality of guides located on the first and second shell components, the plurality of guides are defined along or near a leading edge of one of the first and second shell components and each defining a curved pathway redirecting the at least one tensioning element such that the at least one tensioning element forms a loop between the first support and second shell component, or the second support and the first shell component. 2 . The adjustable socket system of claim 1 , wherein the proximal and distal parts overlap along the longitudinal axis. 3 . The adjustable socket system of claim 2 , wherein the overlap decreases when the length of the first shell component increases. 4 . The adjustable socket system of claim 1 , wherein an outer surface of the proximal part defines a shoulder arranged to engage a proximal end of the distal part when the first shell component is in the first length. 5 . The adjustable socket system of claim 1 , wherein an inner surface of the distal part defines a shoulder arranged to engage a distal end of the proximal part when the first shell component is in the first length. 6 . The adjustable socket system of claim 1 , wherein the distal part is fixed to the first support and the proximal part is operatively connected to the distal part via an elongate slot defined in the first support. 7 . The adjustable socket system of claim 6 , wherein the proximal part is slidably attached to the first support via a plurality of fasteners extending through the elongate slot. 8 . The adjustable socket system of claim 1 , wherein the distal part is fixed to the first support and the proximal part is slidably connected to the distal part via a clamping plate. 9 . The adjustable socket system of claim 1 , wherein the at least two shell components comprise a second shell component having a second distal part and a second proximal part that are longitudinally displaceable with respect to one another so that an overall length of the second shell component is adjustable. 10 . The adjustable socket system of claim 1 , comprising a distal insert adapted for attachment to a distal end of a liner received in the receiving volume and including an outer surface defining a plurality of ribs or protrusions arranged to increase friction between the distal insert and the first and second shell components. 11 . The adjustable socket system of claim 10 , wherein the outer surface of the distal insert includes a colored band arranged to be visible through an observation window defined between the at least two supports when the distal insert is positioned on the base. 12 . The adjustable socket system of claim 1 , wherein the base includes a curved upper surface and the first support includes a distal end portion that is repositionable on the curved upper surface to vary an angle formed between the first support and the longitudinal axis. 13 . The adjustable socket system of claim 1 , wherein the at least two shell components are formed from plastic materials. 14 . The adjustable socket system of claim 1 , wherein the tightening system further comprises at least one secondary tensioner operatively coupled to the at least one tensioning element. 15 . The adjustable socket system of claim 14 , wherein the at least one tensioning element extends from the tensioning unit through upper and lower guides on the first support and directing the at least one tensioning element through upper and lower guides located along or near the leading edges of the second shell component, the at least one tensioning element extending over a surface of the first shell component. 16 . The adjustable socket system of claim 14 , wherein at least one secondary tensioner is arranged to provide tension control of the at least one tensioning element independent of the at least one tensioning unit. 17 . The adjustable socket system of claim 16 , wherein the at least one secondary tensioner is located on the first support.
