Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Methods of forming wire attachment appliances. Methods may include forming a shell having multiple cavities and an attachment material reservoir within a first cavity of the multiple cavities. The attachment material reservoir may be positioned such that, when the wire attachment appliance is positioned on a dental arch, an attachment material provided within the attachment material reservoir is arranged to contact a surface of a particular tooth for attaching a wire to the particular tooth. Forming the wire attachment appliance may further include forming at least two wire attachment members on an interior surface of at least two second cavities of the multiple cavities. The at least two wire attachment members may be shaped to hold the wire in position with respect to the particular tooth.

First claim

What is claimed is: 1 . A method of forming a wire attachment appliance, the method comprising: forming a shell having a plurality of cavities, the shell having an attachment material reservoir within a first cavity of the plurality of cavities, wherein the attachment material reservoir is positioned such that, when the wire attachment appliance is positioned on a dental arch, an attachment material provided within the attachment material reservoir is arranged to contact a surface of a particular tooth for attaching a wire to the particular tooth; forming two wire attachment members on an interior surface of two second cavities of the plurality of cavities, wherein the two wire attachment members are separate from and attached to the shell wherein the first cavity is between the two second cavities along the dental arch; and after forming the shell and the two wire attachment members in the two second cavities, coupling the wire with the two wire attachment members such that the wire runs across, and is positioned within, the first cavity. 2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method includes forming a virtual model of the dental arch. 3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the method includes creating a physical model based upon the virtual model. 4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the method includes attaching the two wire attachment members to the physical model. 5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the method includes applying a shell formation material over at least a portion of the physical model and the two wire attachment members to form the shell having the two wire attachment members included on the shell. 6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the attachment material reservoir is positioned between the two wire attachment members along the dental arch. 7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the two wire attachment members includes a slot arranged to hold the wire in position. 8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the slot is on a tooth-facing surface of each of the two wire attachment members. 9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein a portion of the slot proximal to a tooth-facing surface of each of the two wire attachment members is wider than a portion of the slot distal to the tooth-facing surface of each of the two wire attachment members. 10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the shell includes one or more tabs arranged for a user to aid in lifting the wire attachment appliance off of the dental arch. 11 . A method of forming a wire attachment appliance, the method comprising: forming a shell having a plurality of cavities, the shell including an attachment material reservoir within a first cavity of the plurality of cavities, wherein the attachment material reservoir is positioned such that, when the wire attachment appliance is positioned on a dental arch, an attachment material provided within the attachment material reservoir is arranged to contact a surface of a particular tooth for attaching a wire to the particular tooth; forming two wire attachment members on an interior surface of two second cavities of the plurality of cavities, wherein the two wire attachment members are separate from and attached to the shell wherein the first cavity is between the two second cavities along the dental arch, and wherein each of the two wire attachment members includes a slot that is arranged to hold the wire in position with respect to the particular tooth; and after forming the shell and the two wire attachment members in the two second cavities, coupling the wire with the two wire attachment members such that the wire runs across, and is positioned within, the first cavity. 12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the method includes forming a virtual model of the dental arch. 13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the method includes establishing a position of the wire on the particular tooth based on the virtual model. 14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the method includes creating a physical model based upon the virtual model. 15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein creating the physical model comprises rapid prototyping the physical model. 16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the method includes attaching the two wire attachment members to the physical model. 17 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the method includes applying a shell formation material over at least a portion of a physical model of the dental arch and the two wire attachment members to form the shell having the two wire attachment members included on the shell. 18 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the two wire attachment members are releasably attached to the interior surface of the respective two cavities. 19 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the slot is on a tooth-facing surface of each of the two wire attachment members.
