Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A specimen collection and delivery apparatus for collecting clinical specimens and delivery of samples thereof to, e.g., microfluidic testing devices for diagnostic analysis is disclosed. The specimen collection and delivery apparatus includes a closure housing for coupling with a sample tube at one end, an open luer for coupling with a complementary luer on a microfluidic device at the other end, and a filter matrix disposed in the interior. The filter matrix is air permeable and liquid impermeable at atmospheric pressure and prevents sample from flowing through the open luer end when coupled to a sample tube containing a specimen. Under vacuum, the liquid sample fraction of the specimen can be drawn through the filter matrix and into the microfluidic testing device through the luer connection for diagnostic analysis.

What is claimed is: 1 . A sample collection and delivery apparatus, comprising: a sample tube having a hollow interior, an opening into the hollow interior at a first outermost end of the sample tube, and an open luer end at a second outermost end of the sample tube opposite from the first outermost end; a first filter matrix disposed within the hollow interior of the sample tube; a hinge coupled to the first outermost end of the sample tube; and a closure housing coupled to the hinge at the first outermost end of the sample tube, the closure housing configured for sealing the opening and including: a filter chamber including a base and a sidewall extending perpendicular from the base to define a cavity in the closure housing, the filter chamber further including a rim at an outer end of the sidewall opposite from the base; and a second filter matrix disposed within the cavity of the filter chamber, wherein the base of the filter chamber contacts the first outermost end of the sample tube, and wherein the rim and the sidewall of the filter chamber extend into the hollow interior of the sample tube and the rim engages an internal surface of the sample tube to removably seal the opening at the first outermost end of the sample tube. 2 . The sample collection and delivery apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first filter matrix is air permeable and liquid impermeable at atmospheric pressure, and wherein the sample tube is a single continuous body. 3 . The sample collection and delivery apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first filter matrix is air permeable and liquid permeable under reduced pressure and configured to enable the flow of liquid specimen through the open luer end. 4 . The sample collection and delivery apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the reduced pressure is one pound per square inch. 5 . The sample collection and delivery apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the filter matrix is comprised of a porous material selected from the group consisting of a hydrophobic porous material, a hydrophilic porous material, an oleophobic porous material, and an oleophilic porous material. 6 . The sample collection and delivery apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the internal surface of the sample tube corresponds to a location along the sample tube with a reduced thickness relative to a remainder of the sample tube. 7 . The sample collection and delivery apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the rim engages the internal surface of the sample tube proximate a location where the sample tube changes thickness. 8 . The sample collection and delivery apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the base of the filter chamber has a larger circumference than the sidewall of the filter chamber, and wherein the rim has a larger circumference than the sidewall of the filter chamber such that the rim extends away from the sidewall of the filter chamber to engage the internal surface of the sample tube. 9 . The sample collection and delivery apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first filter matrix is impregnated with an internal assay control comprising a natural or a non-natural nucleic acid sequence. 10 . The sample collection and delivery apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the sample tube includes a tapered section between a lower portion of the sample tube and the open luer end, the sample collection and delivery apparatus further comprising: a plurality of ribbed projections extending along the tapered section from the lower portion toward the open luer end. 11 . The sample collection and delivery apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising: at least two ribbed projections radially disposed between a lower portion of the sample tube and the open luer end, wherein the at least two ribbed projections are spaced from each other in a circumferential direction around the lower portion of the sample tube and each extend longitudinally in a length direction of the sample tube. 12 . The sample collection and delivery apparatus of claim 11 wherein an external surface of the sample tube includes a tapered section between the lower portion and the open luer end, and the circumferential projections extend longitudinally along the tapered section from the lower portion toward the open luer end. 13 . The sample collection and delivery apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a septum disposed between the first filter matrix and the open luer end, wherein the septum includes a burstable membrane.
