An article of footwear or an article of apparel can include provisions for facilitating the installation of a control device. The control device can include a panel comprising a plurality of buttons that can provide manual control to a user. The control device can be installed in a compartment within the article after initial manufacture of the article of footwear. In some cases, the control device can be used to perform different functions in a motorized tensioning system.

What is claimed is: 1 . An article of footwear, comprising: an upper having a first surface and a second surface, a compartment being formed between the first and second surfaces, the first surface forming an aperture embedded in the first surface; a sole structure coupled to the upper; a power source; and a control device, operatively coupled to the power source, comprising a panel, the control device positioned within the compartment, the panel including an electronic button electrically coupled to the panel and aligned with and extending through the aperture. 2 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the first surface is an outermost surface of the upper. 3 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the compartment comprises a tunnel formed between the first surface and the second surface. 4 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the compartment further includes a slot, and wherein the slot is configured to receive at least a first edge of the panel. 5 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , further comprising a button cover disposed adjacent to the electronic button. 6 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , further comprising a motorized tensioning system, operatively coupled to the control device, wherein the control device is used to transmit commands to the motorized tensioning system. 7 . The article of footwear of claim 1 , wherein the compartment is located along an instep region of the upper.
