An adapter assembly selectively interconnects a surgical end effector that is configured to perform at least a pair of functions and a surgical device that is configured to actuate the end effector. The end effector includes a first axially translatable drive member and a second axially translatable drive member. The surgical device includes a first rotatable drive shaft and a second rotatable drive shaft.

What is claimed is: 1 . An adapter assembly for selectively interconnecting an end effector and a surgical device, the adapter assembly comprising: an adapter housing to connect to the surgical device; and a first drive converter assembly including: a first distal drive shaft rotatably supported in the adapter housing and extending to a distal end of the adapter assembly; a drive coupling nut non-rotatably supported in the adapter housing and threadably connected to a threaded distal portion of the first distal drive shaft; and a drive tube having a proximal portion connected to the drive coupling nut, wherein rotation of the first distal drive shaft axially translates the drive coupling nut and the drive tube. 2 . The adapter assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the first drive converter assembly further includes: a first gear keyed to a proximal portion of the first distal drive shaft; a proximal drive shaft having a second gear supported on a distal portion thereof; and a third gear coupling the first and second gears. 3 . The adapter assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a second drive converter assembly, the second drive converter assembly including: a proximal drive shaft rotatably supported in the adapter housing; a coupling cuff rotatably and translatably supported in the adapter housing, the coupling cuff defining an inner annular race; a coupling slider rotatably disposed within the inner annular race and threadably connected to a threaded distal portion of the proximal drive shaft; and a drive bar having a proximal portion connected to the coupling cuff, wherein rotation of the proximal drive shaft axially translates the coupling slider, the coupling cuff, and the drive bar. 4 . The adapter assembly according to claim 3 , wherein the first distal drive shaft extends through the coupling cuff, such that the coupling cuff is rotatable about the first distal drive shaft. 5 . The adapter assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a drive transmitting assembly, the drive transmitting assembly including: a proximal rotatable drive shaft rotatably supported in the adapter housing, the proximal rotatable drive shaft having a spur gear supported on a distal portion thereof; a ring gear rotatably supported in the adapter housing and defining an internal array of gear teeth that are engaged with the spur gear; a rotation housing rotatably supported in the adapter housing and keyed to the ring gear; and a rotation transmitting bar having a proximal portion connected to the rotation housing and a distal portion connected to a distal coupling assembly configured to selectively connect with an end effector, wherein rotation of the proximal rotatable drive shaft rotates the ring gear, the rotation housing, the rotation transmitting bar and the distal coupling assembly. 6 . An adapter assembly for selectively interconnecting an end effector and a hand-held surgical device, the adapter assembly comprising: an adapter housing configured to selectively connect to a hand-held surgical device; an outer tube having a proximal portion coupled to the adapter housing and a distal portion configured to selectively connect to an end effector; and a first drive converter assembly including: a first distal drive shaft rotatably supported in the adapter housing; a drive coupling nut non-rotatably supported in the adapter housing and threadably connected to a threaded distal portion of the first distal drive shaft; and a drive tube having a proximal portion connected to the drive coupling nut and a distal portion configured to selectively actuate the end effector, wherein rotation of the first distal drive shaft axially translates the drive coupling nut and the drive tube. 7 .
