Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

Systems and associated methods for controlling operation of loading dock equipment are described herein. In some embodiments, the system and associated methods can be used to control operation of loading dock equipment (e.g., a vehicle restraint, a dock door, a dock leveler, etc.) according to a sequence of operations. The sequence of operations can include different sub-sequences based on loading dock conditions. The system can include a display screen that sequentially presents a series of control elements that enable operation of the loading dock equipment. Additionally, the visual appearance and/or sequence of presentation of the control elements indicate the proper sequence of selection to the user, thereby reducing user confusion and simplifying the operation of the loading dock equipment. Some functionality of the control panel can be enabled or disabled based on a current level of authorization.

We claim: 1. A control panel for controlling operation of a plurality of pieces of loading dock equipment at a loading dock, the control panel comprising: a display screen configured to— display a first control element, wherein user interaction with the first control element causes activation of a function of a first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment; and automatically display a second control element in the absence of the first control element after receiving a signal from the first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment indicating that the function of the first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment has been completed or has not been completed, wherein: when the signal indicates that the function of the first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment has been completed, user interaction with the second control element causes activation of a function of a second one of the pieces of loading dock equipment; and when the signal indicates that the function of the first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment has not been completed, the second control element provides an indication to the user to engage an alternate one of the pieces of loading dock equipment. 2. The control panel of claim 1 wherein the first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment is a vehicle restraint. 3. The control panel of claim 2 wherein the function of the vehicle restraint comprises engaging the vehicle restraint with a vehicle. 4. The control panel of claim 1 wherein the second one of the pieces of loading dock equipment is an inflatable shelter, a loading dock door, a loading light, an air curtain, a dock leveler, or a safety gate. 5. The control panel of claim 1 wherein the second one of the pieces of loading dock equipment is a loading dock door. 6. The control panel of claim 5 wherein the function of the loading dock door comprises opening the loading dock door. 7. The control panel of claim 1 wherein the display screen is further configured to automatically display a third control element in the absence of the second control element and the first control element after receiving a signal indicating that the function of the second one of the pieces of loading dock equipment has been completed, wherein user interaction with the third control element causes activation of a function of a third one of the pieces of loading dock equipment. 8. The control panel of claim 7 wherein— the first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment is a vehicle restraint; the second one of the pieces of loading dock equipment is a loading dock door; and the alternate one of the pieces of loading dock equipment is an alternate vehicle restraint. 9. A system for controlling operation of a plurality of pieces of loading dock equipment at a loading dock, the system comprising: a display screen; a processor operably connected to the display screen; and a computer-readable medium containing non-transitory instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to— display, via the display screen, a first control element, wherein user interaction with the first control element causes activation of a function of a first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment; and automatically display, via the display screen, a second control element in the absence of the first control element after receiving a signal from the first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment indicating that the function of the first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment has been completed or has not been completed, wherein: when the signal indicates that the function of the first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment has been completed, user interaction with the second control element causes activation of a function of a second one of the pieces of loading dock equipment; and when the signal indicates that the function of the first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment has not been completed, the second control element provides an indication to the user to engage an alternate one of the pieces of loading dock equipment. 10. The system of claim 9 wherein the first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment is a vehicle restraint. 11. The system of claim 10 wherein the function of the vehicle restraint comprises engaging the vehicle restraint with a vehicle. 12. The system of claim 9 wherein the second one of the pieces of loading dock equipment is an inflatable shelter, a loading dock door, a loading light, an air curtain, a dock leveler, or a safety gate. 13. The system of claim 9 wherein the second one of the pieces of loading dock equipment is a loading dock door. 14. The system of claim 13 wherein the function of the loading dock door comprises opening the loading dock door. 15. The system of claim 9 wherein the non-transitory instructions, when executed by the processor, further cause the processor to automatically display, via the display screen, a third control element in the absence of the second control element and the first control element after receiving a signal indicating that the function of the second one of the pieces of loading dock equipment has been completed, wherein user interaction with the third control element causes activation of a function of a third one of the pieces of loading dock equipment. 16. The system of claim 15 wherein— the first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment is a vehicle restraint; the second one of the pieces of loading dock equipment is a loading dock door; and the alternate one of the pieces of loading dock equipment is an alternate vehicle restraint. 17. A loading dock system, comprising: a first piece of loading dock equipment; a second piece of loading dock equipment; and a control panel, comprising— a display screen; a processor operably connected to the display screen; and a computer-readable medium containing non-transitory instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to— display, via the display screen, a first control element, wherein user interaction with the first control element causes activation of a function of the first piece of loading dock equipment; and automatically display, via the display screen, a second control element in the absence of the first control element after receiving a signal from the first piece of loading dock equipment indicating that the function of the first piece of loading dock equipment has been completed or has not been completed, wherein: when the signal indicates that the function of the first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment has been completed, user interaction with the second control element causes activation of a function of the second piece of loading dock equipment; and when the signal indicates that the function of the first one of the pieces of loading dock equipment has not been completed, the second control element provides an indication to the user to engage an alternate one of the pieces of loading dock equipment. 18. The loading dock system of claim 17 wherein the first piece of loading dock equipment is a vehicle restraint. 19. The loading dock system of claim 18 wherein the second piece of loading dock equipment is a loading dock door. 20. The loading dock system of claim 17 wherein the first piece of loading dock equipment, the second piece of loading dock equipment, and the control panel are each positioned proximate to a loading dock station.
