Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A method of mechanically securing a first object to a second object, wherein the first object has a thermoplastic material in a solid state, the second object has a generally flat sheet portion having a second object edge. A third object is provided and arranged to provide an assembly including the first, second and third objects, in which assembly the second object edge is in contact with the thermoplastic material. Mechanical vibration energy is coupled into the assembly by means of a vibrating tool until a flow portion of the thermoplastic material due to friction heat generated between the second object edge and the thermoplastic material becomes flowable and flows around the second object edge to at least partially embed the second object edge in the thermoplastic material and the third object is caused to be embedded at least partially in the thermoplastic material of the first object.

What is claimed is: 1. A method of mechanically securing a first object to a second object, the method comprising the steps of: providing the first object comprising a thermoplastic material in a solid state; providing the second object with a generally flat sheet portion having a second object edge; providing a third object; positioning the first object, the second object and the third object to provide an assembly comprising the first, second and third objects, in which assembly the second object edge is in contact with the thermoplastic material of the first object; while the second object edge is in contact with the thermoplastic material of the first object, coupling mechanical vibration energy into the assembly by means of a vibrating tool until: a flow portion of the thermoplastic material of the first object due to friction heat generated between the second object edge and the thermoplastic material of the first object becomes flowable and flows around the second object edge to at least partially embed the second object edge in the thermoplastic material of the first object; and the third object is caused to be embedded at least partially in the thermoplastic material of the first object, stopping mechanical vibration and causing the thermoplastic material of the first object to re-solidify, whereby re-solidified thermoplastic material of the first object at least partially embedding the second object edge anchors the first object to the second object and whereby re-solidified thermoplastic material anchors the third object to the first object. 2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein in the step of positioning, the second and third objects are brought into contact with the first object from opposite sites. 3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein in the step of positioning, the first object is brought into contact with the second object from a generally proximal side and the third object is brought into contact with the first object from a generally proximal side, and the step of coupling mechanical vibration energy into the assembly comprises pressing a vibrating tool against a proximally facing coupling face of the third object, whereby by the vibrating tool simultaneously a pressing force relative to the first object and mechanical vibration are coupled into the third object. 4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein in the step of providing the second object, the sheet portion defining a sheet plane and along the second object edge has a section projecting away from the sheet plane towards a proximal direction. 5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein in the step of providing the second object, the second object comprises a perforation, with the second object edge running along the perforation. 6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the sheet portion defines a sheet plane and around the perforation has a deformed section projecting away from the sheet plane, and wherein the deformed section comprises a plurality of tongues, the second object edge being constituted by end edges of the tongues. 7. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the sheet portion defines a sheet plane and around the perforation has a deformed section projecting away from the sheet plane, and wherein the deformed section runs continuously around a periphery of the perforation. 8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of coupling mechanical vibration energy into the assembly is carried out such that during the step of causing the flow portion to re-solidify, the third object extends through a plane defined by the second object edge. 9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the third object comprising a generally flat sheet portion having a third object edge, and wherein the step of coupling mechanical vibration energy into the assembly comprises coupling mechanical vibration energy into the assembly until a flow portion of the thermoplastic material becomes flowable and flows around the third object edge to at least partially embed the third object edge in the thermoplastic material and flows around the third object edge to embed the third object edge in the thermoplastic material. 10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the second object has a second object perforation and the third object has a third object perforation, and wherein the step of positioning comprises aligning the second object perforation and the third object perforation with respect to each other. 11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein in the step of positioning, the second and third objects are brought into contact with the first object from a same side. 12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first object and the vibrating tool, by which the vibration is coupled into the assembly, are adapted to each other so that there is a contact face between the vibrating tool and the first object in addition to a contact face between the vibrating tool and the second object or the third object, wherein in the step of coupling the vibration energy into the assembly, thermoplastic material of the first object is caused to become flowable at an interface to the vibrating tool and is caused to flow relative to the vibrating tool. 13. The method according to claim 12 , wherein the third object comprising a generally flat sheet portion having a third object edge, wherein in the step of positioning the second and third objects are brought into contact with the thermoplastic material of the first object from opposite sides, and wherein the step of coupling mechanical vibration energy into the assembly comprises coupling mechanical vibration energy by means of a first and second vibrating tool from opposite sides into the assembly while the second object edge and third object edge are in contact with the thermoplastic material, until a flow portion of the thermoplastic material becomes flowable and flows around the second object edge and the third object edge to at least partially embed the second object edge and the third object edge in the thermoplastic material, and wherein the first object comprises a first protrusion with a first end portion protruding from the respective face against which the second object edge is pressed, wherein the contact face is between the first vibrating tool and the first end portion, and wherein the first object further comprises a second protrusion with a second end portion protruding from the respective face against which the third object edge is pressed, wherein the contact face is between the second vibrating tool and the second end portion. 14. A method of mechanically securing a first object to a second object, the method comprising the steps of: providing the first object comprising a thermoplastic material in a solid state; providing the second object with a generally flat sheet portion having a second object edge; providing a third object; positioning the first object, the second object and the third object to provide an assembly comprising the first, second and third object, in which assembly the second object edge is in contact with the thermoplastic material of the first object; while the second object edge is in contact with the thermoplastic material of the first object, coupling mechanical vibration energy into the assembly until a flow portion of the thermoplastic material due to friction heat generated between the second object edge and the thermoplastic material becomes flowable and flows around the second object edge to at least partially embed the second object edge in the thermoplastic material; stopping the mechanical vibration and causing the thermoplastic material to re-solidify,
