Abstract

Official abstract text for this publication.

A fluid transfer connector or adapter for coupling a container or pharmacy bottle for facilitating the transfer of fluid or medicine from the bottle to a syringe, or from the syringe to the bottle. Optionally, an additional connector can be provided for coupling the fluid transfer connector to the syringe.

First claim

The invention claimed is: 1. A bottle adapter connector comprising: a cylindrical body comprising an outer peripheral surface configured to engage with an opening of a bottle, an inner peripheral surface, and a floor surface extending radially inward from the inner peripheral surface; a male coupling comprising a conduit extending therethrough, the male coupling extending from the floor surface of the cylindrical body, the male coupling configured to be removably coupled to a female coupling of a container; an outer collar extending from the floor surface and surrounding the male coupling, the outer collar radially offset and inward of the inner peripheral surface of the cylindrical body; and a recess portion defining a portion of the floor surface that the male coupling extends from, the recess portion defined between the male coupling and the outer collar. 2. The bottle adapter connector of claim 1 , wherein the male coupling is a male ISO 80369-3 compatible coupling sized and configured to mate with a corresponding female ISO 80369-3 compatible coupling. 3. The bottle adapter connector of claim 1 , wherein the outer peripheral surface comprises a plurality of laterally offset flanges for providing frictional engagement with the opening of the bottle. 4. The bottle adapter connector of claim 3 , wherein a length is defined between an upper end and a lower end of the cylindrical body, and wherein the plurality of laterally offset flanges extend along the entire length. 5. The bottle adapter connector of claim 1 , wherein the cylindrical body has an outer diameter of between about 12-28 millimeters. 6. The bottle adapter connector of claim 1 , further comprising a sealing mechanism configured for fitting around the male coupling and within the recess portion defined between the outer collar and the male coupling, and wherein the sealing mechanism is configured to be movable between a sealed position where the conduit of the male coupling sealed and a retracted position where the conduit of the male coupling is open and allowing fluid communication therethrough. 7. The bottle adapter connector of claim 6 , wherein the sealing mechanism comprises a resilient grommet comprising a first open end for receiving the male coupling and a substantially closed second end. 8. The bottle adapter connector of claim 7 , wherein the resilient grommet is formed from silicone. 9. The bottle adapter connector of claim 7 , wherein the resilient grommet is movable between a sealed position where the resilient grommet seals the conduit of the male coupling and a retracted position where an entirety of the resilient grommet passes beyond an end portion of the male coupling to permit fluid communication through the conduit and top opening of the male coupling. 10. The bottle adapter connector of claim 1 , wherein the floor surface is substantially flexible and elastically deformable such that the male coupling is movable in an axial direction. 11. The bottle adapter connector of claim 10 , further comprising a cap, wherein the male coupling extends beyond an end of the cylindrical body such that closure of the cap atop the bottle adapter connector causes axial displacement of the male coupling, and wherein the conduit is generally sealed with the cap. 12. A bottle adapter connector comprising: a cylindrical body comprising an outer peripheral surface configured to engage with an opening of a bottle, an inner peripheral surface, and a floor surface extending from the inner peripheral surface; a male coupling comprising a conduit extending therethrough, the male coupling extending from the floor surface of the cylindrical body, the male coupling configured to be removably coupled to a female coupling of a container; an outer collar extending from the floor surface and surrounding the male coupling; a recess portion defined between the male coupling and an inner peripheral surface of the cylindrical body; and a sealing mechanism configured for fitting around the male coupling and within the recess portion, wherein the sealing mechanism is configured to be movable between a sealed position where the conduit of the male coupling sealed and a retracted position where the conduit of the male coupling is open and allowing fluid communication therethrough. 13. The bottle adapter connector of claim 12 , wherein the outer collar is radially inward of the cylindrical body, the recess portion includes a first recess portion defined between the outer collar and the male coupling and a second recess portion defined between the outer collar and the inner peripheral surface of the cylindrical body, and the sealing mechanism is positioned within the first recess portion. 14. The bottle adapter connector of claim 12 , wherein the male coupling is a male ISO 80369-3 compatible coupling sized and configured to mate with a corresponding female ISO 80369-3 compatible coupling. 15. The bottle adapter connector of claim 12 , wherein the outer peripheral surface of the cylindrical body comprises a plurality of laterally offset flanges for providing frictional engagement with the opening of the bottle. 16. The bottle adapter connector of claim 15 , wherein a length is defined between an upper end and a lower end of the cylindrical body, and wherein the plurality of laterally offset flanges extend along the entire length. 17. The bottle adapter connector of claim 12 , wherein the sealing mechanism comprises a resilient grommet comprising a first open end for receiving the male coupling and a substantially closed second end. 18. The bottle adapter connector of claim 17 , wherein the resilient grommet is formed from silicone. 19. The bottle adapter connector of claim 17 , wherein the resilient grommet is movable between a sealed position where the resilient grommet seals the conduit of the male coupling and a retracted position where an entirety of the resilient grommet passes beyond an end portion of the male coupling to permit fluid communication through the conduit and top opening of the male coupling. 20. The bottle adapter connector of claim 1 , wherein the male coupling is radially inward of the inner peripheral surface and radially inward of the outer collar. 21. The bottle adapter connector of claim 1 , wherein an upper edge of the outer collar is positioned within the cylindrical body. 22. The bottle adapter connector of claim 1 , wherein the recess portion includes a first recess portion defined between the outer collar and the male coupling, a second recess portion is defined between the outer collar and the inner peripheral surface of the cylindrical body, and the first and second recess portions are defined between an upper edge of the cylindrical body and the floor surface.
